Sarah Palin, who has a history of confronting corrupt party bosses, probably shocked the establishment again this weekend with her suggestion that “fighting for power” and “not doing the will of the people” may lead to the formation of a viable third party. She used the Republican Party’s replacement of the Whigs in the 19th century as such an example.
Here’s how Fox News reported her comments:
When asked if she would consider creating a third party if neither Gov. Romney nor President Obama would budge from their current positions on a variety of issues, Palin left open the door.
“Look what happened in the mid 1800′s. The Whig party went away and the Republican Party surfaced. Because the electorate got sick and tired of the party fighting for power and not doing the will of the people.”

There has been more parties than just the Republican, Democratic and Whig. George Washington was not a member of any party; John Adams was a Federalist; Thomas Jefferson was a Democratic-Republican; Andrew Jackson was the first Democratic Party President; William Henry Harrison was a Whig; John Tyler, like George Washington was not a member of any party; Abraham Lincoln was the first Republican, and although he was instrumental in freeing slaves, do you think the slaves ever voted Republican?
The party of Democrats is a party of liars, plain and simple. And today’s Republicans are not much better. I pride myself in being Independent, but I do believe it is far past time for a third party in government to balance out the other two welfare and nature preserve parties.
This topic has come up a lot this past year as the republican party ignores the grassroots and tea party. But the problem is much deeper.
The democrat party has moved so far left that it is no different than the socialist/communist parties. So many traditional democrats don’t feel their party represents them any longer – although they still toe the line and vote for their bills. A number of democrats have since left the party and joined the republican party. The problem with that is that the democrat values are not the republican values, so now the republican party has moved left also, and some say is more aligned with the old traditional democrat party. Which is why people claim if JFK were alive today he would be a republican.
So now the republican party is so far left of their values and the constitution that the tea party rose. These are people who believe in the constitution and what once was traditional republican values.
We actually have 4 party values in this country trying to take over 2 parties. There are the socialist/communists, the democrats, the republicans and the constitutional conservatives. That is the fight we are in today with this administration being to the extreme far left.
You nailed it Shelley. I think the GOP as we know it is done. We will probably see a viable third party as early as 2014, and definately by 2016. I think the GOP showed it’s true colors by trying to lock out the grass roots (Tea Party) from the platform committees. If it weren’t for the Tea Party, the GOP would be in a far worse position right now. Although the MSM has claimed most americans aren’t overly concerned with the immigration issues relative to the economy and healthcare,I would strongly disagree. Then again I disagree with pretty much everything the MSM spouts these days. Their days are numbered as well. I think the gates need to be shut for now, until we get our house in order. Most of that issue is about pandering to the Hispanic special interests in exchange for votes.
The idea of a third party sounds good on the surface but it must be avoided like the plague. Third parties today only split Republican votes and insure Democratic victory. Democrats will NEVER allow their voting base to be split (Remember George Wallace in 1972?). At this time the TEA Party is following the correct path; gradually taking over the Republican Party from within. By 2020 or 2024 TEA Party members of Congress will outnumber Republican establishment members. At that time the TEA Party will BE the Republican Party. This is the same strategy the Liberals used to gradually take over the Democratic Party from the late1950s to the mid 1970s. Today the Liberals ARE the Democratic Party.
This they did, if you believe the quote from Norman Thomas (http://quotes.liberty-tree.ca/quote_blog/Norman.Thomas.Quote.FFB1).
However, the clinging to a two party system will always have a dividing line that will be a struggle for the greater half. The Republican party will become like a moderate Democrat, the Democrats will become more extremist, and where does that leave true conservatives? It leaves them without a party to represent their views, and both parties currently in power are actually afraid of a conservative base, which is why the “welfare state” has never, to this date, been solved, although tackled by several Presidents since Nixon, who initiated the first major bump in the welfare system in 1968 or 1969 (http://www.neoperspectives.com/welfare.htm).
As such, NEITHER party will ever tackle the welfare problem at its root because promises to help the needy and “spread the wealth” are part and parcel of the politicians if they want ever to be re-elected, and a third party which will represent conservatives will be the only option to take on big brother, the government. The Tea Party is based on the Republicans, but they are infiltrating a corrupted party, and corruption will never be cured from inside. The Democrats need to look very carefully at their party and realize what damage it is doing to our country, and until Democrats either take control from the communists in their midst, force reforms within their party, I feel the USA may well be lost forever.
