President Barack Obama — who came to power with the help of government employee unions across the nation and has lavished on them hundreds of billions in stimulus funds to keep them on federal, state and local payrolls with no strings attached — is moving to cut spending on salaries for military personnel.
This weekend The Washington Post headlined story, “Pentagon Asking Congress to Hold Back on Generous Increases in Troop Pay,” disclosed that the Obama administration is “pleading” with Congress to give military personnel a much smaller increase in pay than lawmakers have proposed.
The Pentagon contends that Congress simply has been too generous with troops during the past decade.
In fact, lawmakers have lavished so much money on troops, according to the Post, that service members are now better compensated than workers in the private sector with similar experience and education levels.
For example, the military brass claims that an average sergeant in the Army with four years of service and one dependent would receive $52,589 in annual compensation, according to the paper. This figure includes basic pay, housing, and subsistence allowances, as well as tax benefits.

I looked up the pay scale for an E-5 over four. The pay doesn't even come close to that $52,589 figure in the ariticle? Am I missing something?
Ex. Sergeant stationed at Camp Pendleton
1. Base: $2414/mo
2. BAH: $1776/mo
3. BAS: ~$300/mo
Total: $53880
The military pays a large portion of salary with supplementals so they can save billions in retirement (retirement is only base pay). I don't understand why when people read "base pay," they think that is it. Base implies there is an additional form of income. I'm a Marine O-3 and prior enlisted, I can honestly say that we are happily overpaid for what we do. When hardship duty is necessary the salary matches the duty. The DOD operations budget is 60% personnel, whenever pay increases are authorized, that comes out of our budget to do operations. Not to mention the outrageous benefits (i.e. GI Bill, Resident PME, incentive pays/bonuses.) Again, as a whole the military is overpaid.
I got an idea. If the civilians are so concerned about their military counter parts making more money than them then they need to go down to their local recruiters office, raise their right hand, and go face the enemy like their military counter parts are doing. Quit crying and remember the cost of freedom isn't free. That socialist prick that has the nerve to call himself our President and the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the United States needs to remember this: Only two forces have ever offered to die for us. Jesus Christ, he died to save our souls, and the American Fighting Man, he died to save our freedom. Obama doesn't care about anybody but himself.
I have family in the military and they are at the poverty level. However, they make just a few dollars too much to qualify for food stamps! This is disgraceful! The congress can grant themselves raise after raise, but can't see fit to raise the salary of our military! We need to find out who votes against raising their salary and vote them out in November 2010 and 2012.

The solution as to whether the military is being paid too extavagantly, is to place the public servant of equal experience on rotational duty to the war zone so that they may provide congress with a hands on point of view. As a military retiree, my point of view is that I would probably have more benefits now, if, I would have stayed in the private sector. As a vietnam vet, from California, I still do not understand why burning "Old Glory" translates into a that person/s simply showing his patriotism and love of country.
