Sen. Benjamin Cardin, a Maryland Democrat, hates to see what’s happening to
America’s newspapers. So do I. My livelihood depends on one.
Cardin has introduced a bill in the Senate that would allow newspapers to change
from profit-making entities to nonprofits. Income from advertising and circulation
would be tax-exempt and papers could accept donations that would be tax-deductible
for the donors.
Newspapers would become charities.
John Sturm, president and chief executive officer of the Newspaper Association of
America, told the Associated Press that Cardin “recognizes changes in the law might
be necessary to provide a boost to newspapers trying to weather this difficult
economic period.”
