When the Conservative right ran ads based on truth about opposing political candidates – about Willie Horton, for example— the Leftist media called it sleazy and unfair. But as we are seeing this year, vicious and utterly untrue and malicious ads from the Left are only properly rebuked by recognized media fact-checkers and occasionally by honest cable networks like Fox and C-SPAN. The so-called establishment media has proven itself to be a hypocritical institution run by radicals and staffed by left leaning liberals. The level of hypocrisy keeps growing – and as it does, it encourages the Left to be ever more brazen in its soul-less assassinations of character and gutting of human decency.
Consider a few occurrences from the last several weeks alone. Democratic spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter suggested in so many words that Mitt Romney is a “felon”. Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, while pandering to the base, called Republicans the “E.coli caucus”. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, making sure to say it in the well of the Senate to avoid prosecution, defamed Mitt Romney by accusing him of not paying taxes for ten years. Both Pelosi and Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman-Schultz spoke up in Reid’s support, neither of whom have released any of their tax returns. The Obama campaign consistently has blamed Romney for the closure of a steel plant that Romney’s Bain Capital firm had invested in, even though the plant closed because of poor management decisions with labor amidst a nationwide gut of the steel market from 1997 through 2001. Romney had already left Bain two years earlier. Without Bain’s infusion of cash, the plant would have been forced to close years before. In short, Bain saved hundreds of jobs for another five or six years. Where are the people whose jobs were saved? Did they all fade into the woodwork so they can’t refute what Obama is saying? Why haven’t any of them stepped forward? It’s a good question, but it doesn’t have an answer yet.
Speaking of people whose job was saved, Priorities USA, the SuperPAC run by longtime Obama aide Bill Burton, has circulated an ad blaming Romney for the cancer death of the wife of a worker at the steel plant, who didn’t lose his job until 2007. Supposedly, she died because she lost health insurance when he lost his job. It was never mentioned that she kept her insurance through her job at a printing outfit for several years. The facts show that she kept the insurance for two more years and wasn’t even diagnosed with cancer for three more years after leaving her job. This made it five years after the plant’s closure and seven years after Romney left Bain. Where is the clamor for honesty in advertising as there was when the Conservatives touted Obama’s incompetent handling of the economy? How dare they say that unemployment has been over 8% since Obama took office and that if you counted the people who have given up or have taken 2 or 3 part-time jobs, the unemployment rate would be 14%!
Even some of the liberal media have had to address the atrocity in Obama’s ad. Prodded by Fox News and other fair and balanced publications, ABC and some other liberal-leaning networks have described the ads as being “over the top”, but hardly with the level of outrage that greeted the Willie Horton ads in 1988. The Washington Post described it as “unsupportable at best”. And then when Romney’s campaign was given a chance to comment on the ad, Romney’s spokesperson did not take advantage of the Obama catastrophe. Instead of telling the commentator how hideous it was to suggest such a thing, she said something inconsequential about “Universal Healthcare” being the solution. What she said had nothing to do with the issue at hand. Even though they know it was not true, many in the media, especially the Washington Post, pounced on the one snippet suggesting that Romney was promising to roll back government protections for families like theirs. Whatever you think, it’s up to you to do proper research to find out exactly what the Romney – Ryan plan actually suggests.
Conservatives might have a good point if they called the full array of leftist/Obama/Democratic campaign tactics against Mitt Romney the sleaziest campaign in history. They can show that during this election cycle, anything coming out of Chicago has had the premeditated purpose of smearing Obama’s opponent(s). They can also show how men of vision rise above the depths of crassness exhibited by the other side and show by example what it means to be dedicated, determined, compassionate, and God-loving men of the people.
