President Obama will be handed the power to shut down the Internet for at least four months without Congressional oversight if the Senate votes for the infamous Internet ‘kill switch’ bill, which was approved by a key Senate committee yesterday and now moves to the floor.
The Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act, which is being pushed hard by Senator Joe Lieberman, would hand absolute power to the federal government to close down networks, and block incoming Internet traffic from certain countries under a declared national emergency.
Despite the Center for Democracy and Technology and 23 other privacy and technology organizations sending letters to Lieberman and other backers of the bill expressing concerns that the legislation could be used to stifle free speech, the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee passed in the bill in advance of a vote on the Senate floor.
In response to widespread criticism of the bill, language was added that would force the government to seek congressional approval to extend emergency measures beyond 120 days. Still, this would hand Obama the authority to shut down the Internet on a whim without Congressional oversight or approval for a period of no less than four months.
The Senators pushing the bill rejected the claim that the bill was a ‘kill switch’ for the Internet, not by denying that Obama would be given the authority to shut down the Internet as part of this legislation, but by arguing that he already had the power to do so.

Dave, the Progressives thought they had the media under control by having control of the tv and cable news and the newspapers. They didn't realize until only recently, during the 18 months since Oilbama's coronation, the huge readership of the citizen journalists on the Internet nor how well they're informed and thus how well they keep us informed. Since they control the citizen journalists nor dictate to them what they will and will not report, control of the medium – the Internet – is the only way they can regain and maintain control of the public knowledge.
As for why congress would vote to do this, that's because a huge number of them are Progressives (aka socialists or Marxists). The rest are made up of career politicians who, being there for the pay and pension plan, just go along to get along, cowards, RINOs who also go along to get along, and dumb a$$es. There are only a few of them who actually care about the country, the citizens, the Constitution, and have the courage to stand up for what they believe in. There just aren't enough of those to vote for what's right and against what's wrong.

Looks as if the panel wishes to grant the President dictatorial powers. Have contacted senators here in California demanding that a dictatorship is not wanted in the United States of America and we shall use the ballot to indicate that it is the people who have the rights to dictate to Government what it should do and it should be done Constitutionally. Else we shall use our rights to ensure that we shall not be enslaved by a President, Dictator, King or Tsar.

Since a majority of voice and video calls traverse the Internet, what will happen to such communication. Even traditional wireline companies use the Internet for backhaul. What happens to those calls, What about 911 service, etc.? I doubt if the Congress has even thought about these issues.
And even IF they have thought about it, I doubt that they CARE!
I'm sure that, when (NOT "IF"!) Obama flips that switch, he and his minions WON'T BE affected by such an Internet outage. There will be "selective" shut-downs, targeting specific sites, email and IP addresses only. Think it can't be done? Don't bet on it!

Deep breath, folks. Obama can't kill the Net no matter how many Senators he has helping him. The Net was designed to survive NUCLEAR WAR. As such it is redundant – a packet can take any one of many alternate paths to get to its destination. If the internet connections running through North America are shut down, the Net will slow down – it's true – but information will flow around the problem, through connections not under Obama's control. If the American shutdown persists, those alternate connections will be multiplied and expanded to meet global Internet capacity demand. The US government started the Net, but it can't stop it.
Second point: the gov is Net-dependent to a greater degree than the private sector. If Obama pulls the switch he shoots himself in the foot.
PS,any excuse that this is for national security is pure BS.ALL our CRITICAL military and government systems run on a redundant system,both the civilian internet and a nationwide dedicated grid that is buried between 48 an 52 inches underground with a foot of concrete over the pipe carrying the fiber optic cables.I know this because in the mid 80's I worked for a company that was one of the contractors on this project.The only reason as stated in my last post to shut down the public internet would be to stifle political dissent,not for any national security reason.

Cyber war is a very real threat. China's attacks on Google are just a preview. We'd be stupid to watch helplessly while our country was attacked via the internet and the president did nothing because he lacked the authority. Whether I like the current president or not, he is the commander in chief, and he needs to have the power to protect us when we are attacked.

Obama must not be giving the opportunity to shut down the Internet for even 4 seconds. That is not Constitutional at all. That is like saying he should also have the authority to shut down another public domain like air, water or eating carrots. He has no right to do that.
