NBC Correspondent Richard Engel is taking sides in the debate over what to do next in Afghanistan.
Appearing on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” today, Engel declared, “I honestly think it’s probably time to start leaving the country. I really don’t see how this is going to end in anything but tears.”
Engel’s comments — which came in response to the simple question, “What did you see in Afghanistan?” – have become part of the political debate. In an interview today on CNN, Senator Russ Feingold repeatedly quoted Engel in a making the case for a timetable for withdrawing US troops.
Engel described the kind counter-insurgency effort advocated by General McChrystal as “a loser.”

One thing to be very careful of is we must examine the whole conflict from a historical standpoint. Remember Russia did not invade Afghanistan. They were there helping the Central Afghan government get power. Russia was negotiating a treaty to put an oil and gas pipeline through Afghanistan. In supporting the central government against the various wartords they had to bargain with for rights for the pipeline they were lending financial and educational assistance. One major move that the Russians talked the central government into doing was enter the 20th century. Make women equals, let them get educated, protect their rights. This infuriated the rural warlords and set in motion the rebellion against the central government and the Russians.
LOOK we are doing the same thing… —Think can we change thier customs or not—-
If not how can we win?????????
Im all for winning the war and backing our troops but it may take one or two generations to pass before it is finished. You dont change these people fast.
OK your opinion next
I think you have a good point, about changing opinions taking time, but that is not the mission of us being there. We went in to root out terrorists. If we are going to change the mission than Obama needs to explain that, otherwise he ought to listen to the generals on the ground or get us out altogether. What is interesting about this story is the fact that this "reporter" is stating his opinions instead of reporting on the conflict.
Changing his mind….just a Progressive Shill looking to spin the situation, downing the troops while he's embedded……wonder someone doesn't frag him….oh, yeah, forensics….but I'm certain there's a lot of AK-47's laying around there….but that would be inciting murder…..so that's out….
…..but what do you do…..the US is backing a corrupt gov…..which looks similar to the gov the Soviets installed when they invaded….& then left because of overwhelming losses…..these people know what they're doing to oppose an enemy that doesn't know the land like they do. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that there is a real problem here.
A corrupt gov in country, a shaky gov next door in Pakistan…yet Pakistan maintains that no official presence of US Troops would be allowed in their country…..so Al Queda & Taliban only have to move across the border to relative safety…Until the US Troops withdraw, then they sneak back to hit & run on our Troops. You can't have 10,000 Predators flying overhead tracking & attacking suspected terrorists.
