The Obama administration will spend about $50 million this year on protecting the Great Lakes from greedy Asian carp, including first-time testing to see if the fish have reached Lakes Michigan and Erie.

Federal officials tell The Associated Press the government has updated its strategy for battling bighead and silver carp that have infested the Mississippi River watershed and are closing in on the Great Lakes.

Scientists say if the carp take hold in the lakes, they could threaten the $7 billion fishing industry by gobbling up plankton at the base of the food web.

  1. I rarely agree with the government on anything but on this issue I do. These Asian Carp are also called Frankin fish, wild as this sounds they can walk on land for a short distance. They are killing the other fish in the Great Lakes by the millions, the fishing industry is down due to thee monsters. IF get get into other rivers and streams I doubt if we cn ever get rid of them . They were brought in by an immigant from one of the Asian countries, he had a few shipped over, released them in a pond and within a few years they had made thier way into the Great Lakes. They really are Frankin fish.

  2. Him they did nothing to prevent the Zebra mussel from invading the fresh water system of the Mississippi River and its tributaries. I say let the yankees eat carp. All they had to do was to shut down the canal at Chicago.
