A subject of Her Majesty the Queen and resident in London since 1976, I grew up in Hong Kong (I had my third birthday on the ship on the way there, October 1958). Hong Kong is my political and economic gold standard, the freest place on earth in the 20th century, yes even freer than the U.S.A! I take a keen interest in the U.S., always finding anti-Americanism to be as stupid as antisemitism, which has often gotten me into impassioned arguments here in the U.K. In the main my belief in markets and freedom arises from my childhood and adolescence in Hong Kong, supported by my habit of reading, which is my greatest interest – history, economics, philosophy, theology, and the great British and American writers of the 19th and 20th centuries. I am a writer and a secondhand bookdealer and a freelance editor.
