Goldie Hawn's Daughter Kate Hudson Says Mom Was at Her Side During Birth of Grandchild

Share

Many mothers and daughters have the gift of being very close. Their connection goes beyond that of merely mother and daughter, and turns into friendship.

No matter how close they are, though, when it comes time for the daughter to give birth and become a mother herself, there are some tricky questions to ask.

Does the mother-to-be want anyone in the room with her while she’s giving birth? Does she want her mother or mother-in-law in the room?

While the decision is entirely up to the pregnant woman, feelings can definitely be hurt in the decision-making process. Some treat the event like a party, while others don’t want anyone — even their husband — in the room.

For Kate Hudson, the decision was simple, in a sense. She and her mom are super close, so it was only natural that she’d ask her to be in the room when she gave birth.

When Hudson was giving birth to her second child, Bingham, she invited her mom to tag along — but Goldie Hawn displayed humorous, less-than-model behavior.

“I called my mom to tell her I’m in the hospital and in labor,” Hudson told People magazine. “And she was like, ‘Okay, well, how much time do I have? Because I was going to take a swim.’

“She shows up, and I have not eaten in like 10 hours. She shows up with a pizza and Doritos. She’s like, ‘I’m starving.'”

Along with wearing glasses that had lights attached to them, Hawn also made uncomfortable flower analogies and disconcerting comments on the birth proceedings.

“Meanwhile, my mom’s going (to the doctor), ‘That’s not normal. It that normal?’ It really was a Woody Allen film,” Hudson said.

So this time, for Hudson’s third child and first daughter, Hawn was invited back — but she made sure she didn’t repeat her errors. Even Hudson admitted on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” that this time around, things were “different.”

“Well first of all, I had asked your permission,” Hawn said, “because the last time that it happened I ate too many Doritos in front of you, brought you a lotus, asked you to smell it — which is the worst thing you could do to a pregnant person, and then you asked me to please put down my pizza.

“So, then when I had, whatever, you leaned up and said ‘Mom, shut up’ in one of your major contraction pushing things. So, I was careful. And I said, ‘Would it be okay? Do you want me to be in the room? So I did ask permission. You see, I’m a really fair mom, aren’t I?”

Hudson agreed, and then went on to detail how she attempted to give birth naturally. She ended up asking for the epidural, citing the fact that she was “too social for natural childbirth” and felt like she wasn’t able to participate in conversations going on around her while also dealing with major contractions.

Apparently, Hawn was hovering too close to the doctor and Hudson remembers the doctor saying, “Goldie, if you get any closer, you’re going to fall in.”

Now that it’s over, though, the mother-daughter duo appear to be on good terms and the experience seems to have brought them even closer together.
