The Christian owners of a New York farm where marriage ceremonies are held now face a discrimination complaint because they refused to allow a lesbian couple to use their facility for a “wedding” ceremony. Such unions are now legal in the state.
Robert and Cynthia Gifford, owners of Liberty Ridge Farm, are committed Christians who, because of their beliefs, object to same-sex unions. But according to New York law, they cannot refuse the lesbians.
Liberty Counsel founder Mat Staver tells OneNewsNow the incident illustrates the clash that would come from homosexual activism, “and now it’s here.” The loss, he says, goes against religious freedom.
“I believe in this situation what they’ll ultimately say is that now that same-sex marriage is authorized, it’s no different than having [the point of contention be] race,” the attorney suggests.
“Therefore, if you were to exclude couples from your facility where you’re otherwise doing weddings because of their race, it’d be the same as if you exclude them because they’re same-sex couples.”
