According to recent reports, eight-year-old Shiloh Jolie-Pitt – the fourth-born and oldest biological child of Hollywood stars Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie – has long been convinced she is supposed to be a boy.
When she was just three, Brad Pitt openly discussed the issue, maintaining that Shiloh would only respond to the name ‘John.’
“She wants to be a boy,” Pitt said at the time, adding that the toddler “likes to wear boys’ everything” and “thinks she’s one of the brothers.”
Pitt’s remarks were confirmed by Jolie in an interview two years later.
In his 2008 interview on the subject, Pitt apparently chalked his daughter’s proclivity up to “a Peter Pan thing,” asserting that “it’s just that kind of stuff that’s cute to parents and it’s probably really obnoxious to other people.”
That gender-bending predilection has apparently not waned in the intervening years, as evidenced in a recent red carpet appearance for her mother’s new film, ‘Unbroken.’
Shiloh appeared in a suit along with two of her brothers, an act embraced by her parents. The couple’s endorsement of their daughter’s gender identity has been celebrated by transgender advocates.
Sunnivie Brydum, a writer for the pro-gay Advocate, cited a psychologist who declared gender confusion “totally normal” and referred to Shiloh as John and with the pronoun ‘they’ in the article.
The use of “’they’ as a gender-neutral, singular pronoun,” an editor’s note stated, is done “in an effort to respect the young Jolie-Pitt’s gender identity, whatever that may end up being.”
Others, particularly those weighing in on social media, were less enthusiastic about such a young girl making the decision to live as a boy.
