Iowa Becoming A Paul Vs. Gingrich Shootout

With the dizzying fall of Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich has stepped into the breach and now stands alone as the most popular GOP presidential candidate in The Des Moines Register’s new Iowa Poll.

Gingrich, with support of 25 percent of likely Republican caucusgoers, is seven points ahead of the rising Ron Paul, who’s at 18 percent. Mitt Romney drops to third, at 16percent, denting his previously armor-plated Iowa polling average. Romney’s support stood at 22 percent last month.

Cain, who suspended his campaign Saturday, had plunged from 23 percent to 8 percent in just over a month, tied with Michele Bachmann.

In a race that’s still far from settled, previous candidate surges have had a half life. But Gingrich’s comes at a critical time — with just a month until the first votes are cast in the nation’s GOP nominating contest. The key question is whether his support represents momentum or a peak.

Politics watchers say it could be difficult for Gingrich to withstand the rigors of front-runner status, especially when his campaign has shown a lack of discipline so far, plagued by early debt, staff turnover and a paper-thin organization.

Whether it's flip-flopping on TARP, supporting the individual mandate that served as a model for "ObamaCare," joining with Nancy Pelosi in support of the global-warming crowd's radical agenda, or making millions off of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac as they helped destroy our economy, Newt Gingrich is trying to pull the wool over our eyes.
He's what is called a "counterfeit conservative."

  2. Newt and Romney are liberals and RINO's of the GOP………. Bachmann and Paul are conservatives of the GOP. Perry is a Moderate conservative. Newt, Obama, and Romney would destroy America as the liberals want!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Marv…everyone the GOP is pushing, those from the "good old boys club" are NOT conservatives!!
Bachman probably is, but hardly in the running, I can only hope the vote will turn away from Republicans per se and vote for Ron Paul, even though I don't like him either!! He's better that what the GOP is offering as a conservative!! ALL RINO's!

The media lies ,where do they get these numbers anyway? Gingrich isn't liked by many Iowans.

  4. Both Gingrich and Romney are in the pocketr of the advocates for a one world government

  5. Most of the up and down shifting as we look for one to get behind is almost ended. Time is running out and we need to start uniting behind one to beat Obama. It isn't easy to beat Obama, he has more money, people who are on the dole or illegal that need to vote for him, the unions, and most of Congress. Anybody who owes him a favor which is many must vote for him. There is worry the election will be honest and real.
If we split he wins – we cannot afford one vote not to go to the winner of the candidates, whoever he/she is. We will see the majority move to one candidate and when we see that, we will climb onboard – because seriously, any one of them will be better than OBAMA. Get out and spread the word and VOTE.

  6. I don't care who the Republican Party picks. I would vote for a skidrow bum, before I would vote for Obama.

  8. Newt will be Newtered soon enough!

    Ron Paul 2012 or BU$T !!

  9. I pray that the Iowans read their history of both Newt and Ron before they vote. If they do….they will see that even tho' Ron Paul is not as flamboyant and flashy as a speaker/debater……he has the country's best interests at heart. Newt is just same old same old WDC.
I believe that Ron Paul could turn the country around………….back to what it was meant to be………….and Newt will carry it on with the WDC elite being the only ones who benefit.
