I Was Fired For Telling The Truth

Yesterday NPR fired me for telling the truth. The truth is that I worry when I am getting on an airplane and see people dressed in garb that identifies them first and foremost as Muslims.

This is not a bigoted statement. It is a statement of my feelings, my fears after the terrorist attacks of 9/11 by radical Muslims. In a debate with Bill O’Reilly I revealed my fears to set up the case for not making rash judgments about people of any faith. I pointed out that the Atlanta Olympic bomber — as well as Timothy McVeigh and the people who protest against gay rights at military funerals — are Christians but we journalists don’t identify them by their religion.

And I made it clear that all Americans have to be careful not to let fears lead to the violation of anyone’s constitutional rights, be it to build a mosque, carry the Koran or drive a New York cab without the fear of having your throat slashed. Bill and I argued after I said he has to take care in the way he talks about the 9/11 attacks so as not to provoke bigotry.

This was an honest, sensitive debate hosted by O’Reilly. At the start of the debate Bill invited me, challenged me to tell him where he was wrong for stating the fact that “Muslims killed us there,” in the 9/11 attacks. He made that initial statement on the ABC program, “The View,” which caused some of the co-hosts to walk off the set. They did not return until O’Reilly apologized for not being clear that he did not mean the country was attacked by all Muslims but by extremist radical Muslims.

I took Bill’s challenge and began by saying that political correctness can cause people to become so paralyzed that they don’t deal with reality. And the fact is that it was a group of Muslims who attacked the U.S. I added that radicalism has continued to pose a threat to the United States and much of the world. That threat was expressed in court last week by the unsuccessful Times Square bomber who bragged that he was just one of the first engaged in a “Muslim War” against the United States. — There is no doubt that there’s a real war and people are trying to kill us.

  3. I'm with you, Juan! But I'd take it a step further. It isn't only the dress thatt identifies them, but when their religion clearly defines that it is their duty to Allah to anihilate the 'infidel'…how can we beleve that the Muslims want to live peaceably amonst those in a Christian Nation (contrary to Obama's definition of the Nation)? Freedom of religion means practicing a worship of God in different ways; it does not mean that a religion is free to kill those who disagree with them. This is the real message that most appear fearful of expressing. Those accepting the Quran as their intended way of life should not be allowed in the USA.

  4. Ray Ikone says:

I disagree with NPR for firing Juan, but get it right. Building a Mosque is NOT a constitutional right.

  5. While Juan has never been my favorite news analyst, I think NPR's actions were grievous. Why are Christianne Amanpour's (sp?) comments – which are blatantly biased – acceptable while Juan's are not? I think we will find in the days to come that NPR has bitten off a much larger mouthful than they can chew. However, I fear they will not suffer financially even if Congress finds the courage to remove them from the public trough. Soros will happily provide whatever funding they might lose since he is the one pulling their strings and they are only too happy to dance to his tune. The local affiliates are the ones who will suffer if thinking citizens decide they will not support a station that subscribes to NPRs lunacy.

  6. How does NPR get away with violating Juan"s first amendment rights when it largely depends on federal money to survive? The federal money is taxpayers dollars. That flow of money MUST be cut off immediately! He merely stated a personal opinion. And I agree completely, If I boarded a plane with obvious Muslims aboard I would change flights.

    • The First Amendment does not require you to employ someone who says things you don't like. Ask Don Imus and Rick Sanchez.

"it largely depends on federal money to survive"

Not true, Perhaps it should be cut, though public funding provides well under 20 percent of the average station's budget. And NPR stations in in big cities (typically more liberal) get less than that, while stations in rural (typically more conservative) areas get far more (up to 70 percent) of their operating budgets from public funding.

In short, cutting off government funding won't kill NPR in liberal areas, but it might in conservative ones. Maybe that's OK with you–but those rural areas also have fewer other options for the classical music, jazz and opera that can be found on many public stations but which the market is less likely to support. And it's not just liberals who appreciate those forms of the arts.

And if you want NPR on a for-profit model, you can expect more partisanship, not less, as we see with other media.

      • If the fact that George Soros is a huge contributor to NPR isn't enough to turn you against NPR, I
feel sorry for you. The expulsion and the insulting of Juan Williams shows that liberals are not complete human beings. I am sure Juan will move nore to the conservative side. I believe he will become an employee of Fox News. Liberals can always see problems, but their solutions always seem to cost taxpayers bundles of money. Obama and his idiotic Congress is a perfect example of spending money and not getting any good results. Keynesian economics has never worked. Austrian economics always works. Failure should never be rewarded.

Juan Williams did tell the truth!

If i were Juan Williams i would most definitely file a law suite against NPR for violating their contract
    due to precedence.

  8. Juan,
I may not agree with you on many points, some you are now finding to be true that we have spoken of before. I have always felt you are a man of your word, as well Honest, and fair in all respects.
I will stand by you, can you now see that we are in very dire times, its obvious that the marxist who control the higher levels of media have shown they are not True Liberals like yourself, their colors are now quite clear I hope. May God keep and bless you my firend.
    Later TIME

  9. Hello,
Juan Williams is now seeing what they do to there own, and I am referring to the Libs. so far out on the left btanch that they are called PROGRESSIVES, and I know that a whole lot of people have heard that term before, but theyare the ones that say do as I tell you, not as you want to do even if you believe the same way that I do. The progressive-wing of the demo-"RAT" Party does not care about America. they care about power. Juan Williams has now seen the beast, and it is, or shall I say was HIM.

So Nobuma and his cronies of which NPR is a leg want's to tell us how to feel?

  11. Victor Barney says:

Can you just imagine if anyone ever on the Right said or did this? Marxism equals holocaust! Juan Williams wake-up and smell the roses! The real "racist" are the educated elites(LIBERALS)! Get it? Watch!

  12. William L. Sasman says:

By you telling the truth it hurt those that can't stand it. When we lose our freedome of speech and the other freedoms then the muslins and other hate org. will be happy and control us all.

  13. Williams, you are left of center. So you are getting some of your own hits !

  14. I agree with what Juan Williams said.
I've heard that all muslims are not terrorists, but all terrorists are muslims.

  15. Az Native says:

I think every American citizen shoudl refuse to fly with anyone who is Muslim period…..their history proves that they do not believe as we do and they are not assimulating to our way of life, they are trying to take over our country period and everybody knows it. It is not about religious freedom, it is about a sick way of life and they hate this country, we are all infidels according to their way of life….thus they should not be in our country period…..we can help them in their own homeland, they need to return there and keep their heritage alive there, but it doesn't belong in country. This is the United States of America, not the United States of Islam, or the United States of Shariah Law or the United States of Muslims or the United States of Mexico…..send them home, we are tired of this mess and what some peace, after 9-11 they should have all been deported.

  16. Az Native says:

We've had enough…..this is causing so much heartache and heartbreak int he American people and this president needs to stand up for our nation and our sovereignty, not Muslims, not Islam, this iS NOT THEIR NATION to defend. Send them home…..and I don't blame this guy for his statements….maybe we should all tell the airlines if you allow Muslims to fly you need to alert your passengers so they can deplane…or don't let them fly period…they are putting WE THE PEOPLE In danger just like 9-11 all over again. Shame on them. WE are not allowed to build churches in Muslim nations, we should not allow one mosque to be open in ours…it is time to protect our christian heritage.

  17. Just out of curiosity, how do you tell who is a Muslim? Gee, if you ban Muslims from commercial flights, I can't imagine how any terrorist might get on board. I guess we'll have to ban anyone with black or brown skin, huh? Oh, damn–some Muslims are white.

But I'd be happy to tell you that every flight has one or more Muslims, if it would keep YOU off of my plane. Banning Muslims will make it tougher for Congressman Keith Ellison to get back and forth to his district in Minnesota, but Michele Bachmann probably gets nervous having him so close, anyway. And he doesn't even have the decency to have a "Muslim" name, so we can keep track of him.

Sadly, my Arabic Christian friend "looks" Muslim and has a funny name, so I guess we'll have to keep him off. And those of you who keep saying "send them home." To where? Many Muslims were born here. As was Timothy McVeigh, for that matter.

  18. Az Native says:

The majority of Muslims were not born in American and the majority of American citizens wouldn't have flown planes into towers and killed 3000 innocent people. Muslims will say anything to stay here and take over our country and everybody knows it….it is not about color, it is about a sick way of life.

    • True, the majority of Muslims were not born in America–and the vast majority don't live in America now. And the vast majority of people of any religion wouldn't kill 3,000 people (though McVeigh would have).

But you didn't answer the key question–how do you tell who is Muslim (especially if you were correct in your claim that they would "say anything)?

      • Hot Cougar / Alexia says:

        James Az Native is correct!

You James need to stay on subject!

        • So I assume you're just spouting off again, and that you can't answer the question, either?

          • Hot Cougar / Alexia says:

You question was in no way related to the post genius!

Go back to school & get a life!

          • It is directly related. If the idea is to ban all Muslims, you need to be able to tell who is a Muslim. I assume Az Native–to whom the question was directed in the first place–was smart enough to get the connection, but bailed on the conversation because s/he didn't have an answer and didn't want to get in deeper. You should follow his/her lead once in a while, though I happy that you apparently can't.

          • Hot Cougar / Alexia says:

James It is very simple stupid one!

Let me explain in a way that you'r small mind can comprehend!

            YOU GOT OFF SUBJECT!

          • Wrong again. Read it again, more slowly, or have someone else explain it to you. I won't bother to try to help you with this one again.

      • Does their religion allow them to lie? Mine doesn't. The courts don't allow it. If you doubt they are not muslem ask for some ID. Shouldn't the airport selling the ticket know? I agree, they should tell us.

        • "Does their religion allow them to lie? Mine doesn't."

And neither does the religion of any president in our lifetimes–and yet every single one of them has lied. And regardless of faith, do you trust that someone who is planning to kill a few thousand people will tell the truth?

  19. JUST SENT OUR PRESIDENT AND THE REST OF HIS CZAR ASSWIPES TODAYS NEWS, 2 more Muslim terrorists caught getting ready to blow up some more of the USA> sorry BARRACK HUSSIAN THEY WERE 'NT NAMED molly Goldberg OR
