After back-to-back presidential losses, Republicans in key states want to change the rules to make it easier for them to win.

From Wisconsin to Pennsylvania, GOP officials who control legislatures in states that supported President Barack Obama are considering changing state laws that give the winner of a state’s popular vote all of its Electoral College votes, too. Instead, these officials want Electoral College votes to be divided proportionally, a move that could transform the way the country elects its president.

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus endorsed the idea this week, and other Republican leaders support it, too, suggesting that the effort may be gaining momentum. There are other signs that Republican state legislators, governors and veteran political strategists are seriously considering making the shift as the GOP looks to rebound from presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s Electoral College shellacking and the demographic changes that threaten the party’s long-term political prospects.
“It’s something that a lot of states that have been consistently blue that are fully controlled red ought to be looking at,” Priebus told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, emphasizing that each state must decide for itself.

  1. Unnecessary!!!! All they have to do is go back to a physical paper ballot. It has been proven electronic voting can be rigged with no way to tell. And no way to recount. Look at all the reports that tell of votes going to osama when voting for romney to know this to be fact. Also mandatory I.D. to vote. NO I.D…..NO VOTE!!!!

  2. They best be looking at voter fraud, fielding excellent candidates and party solidarity.

  3. The issue here is, what kind of nation did our Founders envision, and how committed to that vision are we today? Clearly, they were distrustful of direct democracy or anything close to it; they saw it as an invitation to mob rule. That’s why democracy was limited to the House. The Electoral College was a check on democracy, but not a complete denial of it. The Founders did not want the large population centers electing the national candidates. They wanted to ensure that no president could be elected who did not appeal to different types of people across the board– a consensus choice.

Nowadays, when, for example, the vote in Philadelphia outweighs the entire vote for the rest of Pennsylvania, how far down the road to mob rule have we gone? Do we still want a federalized system of government with clear separation of powers, including those of the people? Or is one-man one-vote absolutely sacrosanct? Should the population centers hold all the electoral power? That’s where the people are, after all. Or should there be a deliberate effort to ensure no one gets elected unless he or she appeals to voters across the board– urban, rural, suburban, etc?

Maine and Nebraska have already changed their electoral-vote count to ensure each voting district, regardless of population, still has a voice. The sky has not fallen in either state. Such a method would not require any tinkering with the Constitution. It would be most appealing in states such as mine (Virginia), which has four or five extremely overcrowded counties whose priorities are generally at odds with those of the rest of the state. Pennsylvania and, yes, California are two other states with similar situations.

Let the debate begin. Is “majority rule” the way to go, or is there a better alternative? We can be sure that if Madison, Hamilton, Franklin, Mason et. .al. were here today, they’d be all over this issue.

  4. Sorry, but the only way to so call win is to try and out crook the crooks! You have to be pretty slimy and memorize even bigger lies than ovomit did. You also must repeat the lies like a parrot over and over and over until you brainwash people better that those thugs did and that is a pretty monstrous job!!!
If theres even a hint of decency in the ones running for any office you can be certain they will lose!!

Satan RULES in politics now and has for quite some time!

  5. Get rid of Electoral College. Must have an ID to vote. No ID … No VOTE. If they get welfare or food stamps, they have IDs. If they buy beer, booze and/or cigarettes they have ID. So this bull about hardship is a crock. Last but not least – All Ballots will only be printed in English, so learn the language.

  6. I think it is the primary process that needs overhaul. Different states have different types of primaries and that can sway the result big time!!! Many states don’t even really get to participate in the primary because they don’t vote until May or June and by then the candidate has already been chosen! In some states, you can vote for the candidate of your choice, even if you are not a member of that party!!!! This is why we keep electing liberals and moderate republicans instead of conservatives!!! At one time the primary process we have now might have made sense. With travel and communication advances, it just doesn’t make sense to hold primaries in just a few states, when the whole country has heard the speeches and seen the debates and knows who they would vote for long before their primary comes up!!! The states should also have uniform rules for who gets to vote in a primary. Why should we let the competition choose OUR candidate?? Especially when the Democrat is running unopposed??? They will use their vote to elect an opposing candidate who is either easiest to beat, or is most in line with THEIR agenda! We need to get this right and quit giving the Democrats a free ride!! I don’t care what kind of agreements about voter fraud Republicans might have made in the past. We should definitely call voter-fraud on them, even if it means going back on our agreement – Democrats definitely would!!! Voter I.D. , nation-wide primary, only able to vote your party, which you have to have been registered to for 6 months, no absentee ballots unless you are (truly) disabled or will be out of the country on election day. AND make sure ALL our servicemen are able to vote and their votes are COUNTED, even if they are late, or some Governor decides to discount them on some pretext or other. IMO the men and women who make up our armed forces should get two votes!! And shame on those who deny them this right, when they risk their LIVES for our country every day!!!

    • I agree. All primary voting should be done on the same day like the the main election is done on the 1st Tuesday of Nov. The time of voting times should be staggered. East coast start voting at 10 AM – 10 PM while west coast start at 7 AM -7PM. This way all polling places will close at same time and media can’t declare a winner 3 hrs before the west coast voting closes.

    • The alarm light indicating system failure has been on since the TV and newspaper media smeared Joe McCarthy out of congress in 1954. Who would believe that the media was unaware of Norman Thomas’ announced in the 60s that contention by his Socialist Party would no longer be necessary since the Democratic Party had endorsed every plank of Socialist Party platform?
No miracle of justice can be expected nor has any even been likely to occur since the honor of men disappeared along with dueling. Those of corrupt intent will always be around to milk the government cow or squeeze any turnip in search of just a little free public blood by whatever means necessary. Having to depend on parasite lawyers and corrupt judges in order to maintain their status quo leaves them with little fear of diminished life style provided they grease waiting palms as necessary for lubricating their success.
. Could the current attack on the other constitutionally approved source of justice have finally grabbed their attention and reminded them of their inevitable fate? Are they beginning to stumble among their own kind on the obstacles of their past belligerent treasonous declarations previously diluted in media misinformation? Is it even remotely possible that media whitewash can continue to shield them from their deserved fate and thereby indict all complicit in an encompassing conspiracy? Is a real Red Dawn required to demand public attention before another generation of subject students acquires voter status?
If the forewarned vote count result has failed to stoke the necessary fire of patriotism, the field of choice for return to constitutional intent has been considerably narrowed. With TV media declared two party politics clearly positioned above patriotism from any other source while minimizing any possible nominee outside media’s game plan little lasting change can be expected. All enemies of the republic must be identified not by their words but by their actions. Agenda rhetoric carries little weight before eternal vigilance if presented as such to those in their formative years.

  7. Leave the Electoral process alone. The problem is from within. Get rid of “yappers” like Priebus and put a real doer in there who knows how to organize and fund raise.
