Glenn Beck Contemplates Starting Own Channel

The possibility that Glenn Beck will exit the Fox News Channel at the end of the year has prompted a big question in media circles: if he leaves, how will he bring his considerable audience with him?

Two of the options Mr. Beck has contemplated, according to people who have spoken about it with him, are a partial or wholesale takeover of a cable channel, or an expansion of his subscription video service on the Web.

Reports this week that Joel Cheatwood, a senior Fox News executive, would soon join Mr. Beck’s growing media company, Mercury Radio Arts, were the latest indication that Mr. Beck intended to leave Fox, a unit of the News Corporation, when his contract expired at the end of this year.

Notably, Mr. Beck’s company has been staffing up — making Web shows, some of which have little or nothing to do with Mr. Beck, and charging a monthly subscription for access to the shows.

Were Mr. Beck to set off on his own, it would be a landmark moment for the media industry, reflecting a shift in the balance of power between media institutions and the personal brands of people they employ.

  1. I don't think there are enough gold-selling hucksters to keep Beck's ratings above even Oprah's.

    • Get a life James ! Lol ! Us compare apples to apples! How about Chris Matthews compared to Gleen Beck ? You must have gotten your degree from J.C.Pen Ney University ? That is if you really have a degree?

    • n2politics says:

.James, it's Anthony Stanley. I can't seem to log out of IntenseDebate and log into WordPress. Any suggestions? I've clicked logout everywhere it appears on this page but nothing works.

    • UGACracker says:

Now I'm logged into WordPress. Go figure. Thanks for the advice. BTW, I think Beck is a little full of himself, and I question just how conservative he really is. He comes across like a demagogue more than anything else, and I despise demagogues on both sides of the aisle. They're too shallow.

Oh, and I'm guilty of watching Oprah's network a couple of times. The Laura Ling specials are okay. Or is it Lisa? I get confused.

  2. If Beck leaves Fox, I'll miss him, but not go where he goes. He's interesting, but his Biblical Worldviews are anathema to me. I like most of his takes on history and politics, but he's an apostate Christian in my view…

    • You go Glenn. He will absolutely get better ratings than chubby Oprah. Those idiots watch her show
because she "buys" everyone. They all want that new car and all her favorite things. duh

    • Vern. Amen!

    • Get Him Lord!! says:

To my knowledge Glenn isn't a Christian. He's been confused by Mormon theology! We're all prayin for him. No question he's a patriot! Nevertheless until he gets born-again he's going to bring a bizarre element to the Constitution that was created primarily by true believers in the Biblical Jesus!

  3. Cindy Beach says:

If Beck leaves Fox I can say without a doubt many will follow. He has done more to try and get the truth out, than ANYONE on TV today. Do not forget it was Beck who planted the idea for the 9/12 project.

  4. honeybee says:

GREAT GOING GLENN. I SUPPORT YOU ALL THE WAY.

  5. I could be wrong on this one BUT, I think it is NOT a good idea for Glenn to be only on the internet. I base that purely on myself. I used to subscribe to Skyangel satalite TV. LOVED IT. But they went off TV and just on the internet. I work with a computer each day. I know computers. BUT I don't watch TV on my computer. SOOOO when skyangel went off TV, I never had Skyangel ever again, even tho I LOVED it. I watch FOX NEWS several hours each day. I'm a conservative Christian republican. I have attended 3 TEA Parties. Fox has even used a clip of me at a TEA Party many times. I and many many others that are devoted Beck fans will only occationally catch Beck's show on the net even tho now we watch it faithfully and even record it.
Pray that you won't be led wrong. I say it is a mistake to go off TV.

Judith, You can watch Sky Angel on TV – it just comes through a fast Internet connection (DSL or Cable) not by satellite. I've been getting it this way for months and months. I agree it's not pleasant to watch TV online on my 17" monitor. Nor is my chair all that comfortable, but I/you don't have to. You just need the receiver and a high speed Internet connection. The receiver connects either by an ethernet cable (most reliable in my opinion) or wirelessly to your router and viola, you can see it on TV! You need some short cables to connect the audio and video to your television set. Sky Angel is offering an upgrade to a new and improved receiver for about $70 (I haven't gotten one yet) and I think it comes with more features. They obviously haven't done a good job of informing people about their options – I'll have to write them about this. There must be a a lot of other Judiths out there!

  6. Pastor Chris says:

Glenn Beck has far too much valuable information to share about what's really going on in this country (at its highest levels) to fail.
He will, always, have a substantial market among those who rely upon him telling the truth about the numberous forces who seek the total downfall of this nation. The nation, at large, owes him a deep sense of gratitude.
I, among many others, cannot and will not deprive myself of truths and revelations not found anywhere else among media.

  7. A take over of a cable channel would be wonderful. The viewership would stay and grow. BUT if he drops cable TV and is just on his subscription web service Beck will fade into the shadows.

  8. I would hate to see him leave, but if he did, I would follow unless his services were free and not prostuted out, I pay enough for cable and could not afford to go along for the ride with Beck, so all I have to say at this time is, good luck mr Beck, my prayers are with you, I hope you find the salvation you are looking for, God Bless.

  9. It doesn't seem to me that Beck would be crazy enough to abandon his support from FOX, Murdoch obviously has him contracted for a reason and Beck is thorough enough to hold his own in his quest but going it alone would not allow him to get his message out….

    • POMPUPPIES says:

You know that Glen knows alot more than he is telling. They all do. If he goes out on his own there will be no one to tell him what he can and can't say.

    • I suspect it will be the other way around–that Fox will abandon Beck. He draws a big audience (though one that has dropped considerably) but scares away more advertisers than he attracts(which is where the money comes from). And he's too crazy to let even Fox pretend that it's a "news" network as long as he's the star.

Let's just hope he doesn't end up crossing Rupert Murdoch to such a degree that he ends up in a FEMA camp! :-) http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,513024,00.htm

      • Good point, that lay'n on the line can sure un-nerve you if you are not following what is going on… it's a part of the biz so he can take his chances also.

  10. Carol Gerber says:

Glenn You Can Get A Loan For That Channel From George Soros, Yikeess, Just Tell Him It Is Against Fox News.

  11. BYBOOZOO says:

IRRESPECTIVE AS TO WHICHEVER WAY MR. BECK MOVES, HIS CONSIDERABLE AUDIENCE WILL FOLLOW HIM!

  12. Amiabelle says:

Glenn Beck is very courageous. I'm sure his life is at risk. He has exposed the rotten inner workings of the Obama administration and its cohorts, such as Soros and Cass Sunstein to name a couple. They seem to have the complete destruction of the U.S. and Israel as their goal, and if we don't wake up, they will succeed. Glenn is the only one telling the real story. I hope he doesn't leave FOX because, I think it would be very difficult to get the following he has on a no-name cable network or his subscriber web site. But whatever, he does, I will follow! He is a true patriot and a leader who has stepped forward in this crucial time to alert the public to the real possibility of the destruction of our American way of life.

  13. WeNeedThisMan! says:

Oprah did it. She helped put Obama in office. Why not the Glenn Beck Channel? He can help get Barack out!
