Ad Campaign Calls For More Government Dependence
Fifteen percent of the population is not enough for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. According to ads running in several key states until the end of this month, the agency is urging even more Americans to sign up for food stamp benefits.
Just after the perpetually irresponsible California government decided to actually cut some of its own welfare programs, finally realizing how unsustainable such spending really is, the federal government decided to double down on its policy of creating a citizenry dependent on handouts for its survival.
Without any indication of irony, the ads have been played repeatedly in California among other states, including Texas and New York.
While reports show Washington liberals spent $75 billion on the food stamp program last year, more than twice the amount spent three years earlier, the welfare roles are apparently still too short. You’ll never hear me argue that there should be absolutely no safety net for Americans unable, through no fault of their own, to provide for themselves. I do, however, have a problem with a government actively seeking more participants in an already far-too-bloated program instead of focusing on solutions to the problems faced by those already receiving benefits.
Some see Obama and his ilk as a group of economic dunderheads, incapable of doing anything but digging the nation’s financial hole deeper and deeper.
May I suggest a much more sinister theory? These thinly-veiled Marxists may well have been planning this play even prior to Obama’s election.
Knowing that a voting majority dependent on government will never elect another Republican, Democrats really don’t have much work left to do before reaching the tipping point and creating what amounts to a permanent ruling party.
The flip side of that coin, though, is that a voting majority instilled with the merits of self-reliance will never again elect a Democrat. We must be as vigilant in vocalizing our case as our opposition is in spreading its own message.
The USDA spend about $3 million on these senseless ads, hoping to add precious new names to its list of dependents. I can’t believe that, in this day, there are enough people unaware of government handouts to warrant such an extensive campaign.
With more than 1 in 7 (or nearly 50 million) people currently receiving food stamps, one can scarcely enter or leave the house without encountering someone in the program.
The insightful Newt Gingrich was really onto something when he referred to Obama as the Welfare President.
