Update From Tel Aviv

Franklin Raff RBR 1024x681 Update from Tel Aviv

(Editor’s note: this was written Wednesday, just before the cease-fire.)

Just a quick firsthand account of the situation here for friends in the business.  I am now in my studio with the monitors on all the major networks, the “missile shields” down, (well – they’re sort of like thick steel shutters) and wanted to paint a few quick, clear pictures for you.

Today, as you are probably aware the conflict escalated with at least one bus bombing downtown. I was quite near there at the time and everyone sort of detoured their way around that area while emergency personnel rushed in. One has to be extremely careful after a blast as it is common terrorist practice to plant secondary bombs in order to take out people rushing in to help the wounded.  As of this moment, suspects in today’s attack “may still be” at large, so we are staying off the streets.

You should know that there is a general code of communication here whereby it is taboo to discuss, disseminate, or broadcast specific information regarding missile landings, bomb effects, etc. This is of course due to the fact that this information can be used to aid enemy targeting and ranging, to say nothing of propaganda efforts. Speaking of which, Hamas’ efforts in this regard are slipping a little. According to a Fox report moments ago:  “Solid evidence now reveals how Hamas and Islamic Jihad in Gaza have been deliberately placing their civilian population in mortal danger, choreographing a number of seemingly gory scenes, as well as releasing images from other conflicts, such as Iraq and Syria, and passing them off as dead Gazan civilians killed by Israeli missiles.”

The intentional greying of specifics for one reason or another may be one reason why mainstream media reports are dodgy on the situation here. The other reason, of course, is that many mainstream media reporters are flocking to Gaza where they can be fed information by those with whom many – not all – seem to sympathize. Israel explicitly and incessantly warns journalists in Gaza to stay away, physically, from Hamas operatives. We hear it all the time locally. This advice, tragically, has not been heeded: a fact largely ignored in recent, absurdly irresponsible comments in the press about “Israel targeting journalists.”

Press people: THIS IS WAR. STAY AWAY, PHYSICALLY, FROM HAMAS OPERATIVES.  Stay away from them. Report what you want but do your talking on the phone.

A less unpleasant vignette, aside: Israel is an intensely family-focused culture, and the high regard and affection for children here transcends all imaginable cultural and ethnic divisions. One notices this regularly in restaurants, for instance, where kids are treated like royalty. (My French friends / clients invariably contrast this with the situation in Paris, wherein families with children are often begrudgingly seated in the back corners of bistros.) In the time after today’s blast, I noticed parents of all stripes – Orthodox, secular, Arab Israelis, Ethiopians, European types, the new Sudanese refugees  – discussing the situation, the locations of bomb shelters, offering each other transportation, playing with the children, etc. And – everyone is pitching in to help older folks do just about everything.

Life goes on. That’s the motto here. Friday’s “main event” in my circle was a sailboat race and we decided to go on with it with about 40 yachts in the fleet. I was on shore with the race committee at the moment one rocket landed. When the sirens went off, everyone hit the deck, in this case, literally. I will not say where it landed, or how close it was, but I witnessed the explosion at the moment of impact. Nobody was hurt in this instance, but it was quite something. It is public information, whether or not reported, that in certain types of rockets, Hamas has replaced part of the off-the-shelf explosive payload in their smaller rockets with additional fuel capacity in order to achieve the range required for a Tel Aviv hit. You may draw your own conclusions from that.

As you probably know, Israel demands a cessation of Hamas rocket attacks as prerequisite for a cease-fire. Hamas representatives have said, whether or not it is true, that they are holding longer-range rockets in reserve. They are also promising more homicide-bomber attacks if a cease-fire cannot be reached. I know this, and more, by the way, because I was with my friend Aaron Klein when his source confirmed it. If you want the best news on the situation here, I strongly advise you to add his reports and updates (WABC radio, WND, kleinonline.com) to your media diet. He is totally plugged in – so much so it is almost shocking.

I was here during the “disengagement” from Gush Katif / Gaza, by the way, and visited that lovely, prosperous, and productive town in the days before and during the evacuation of the Jews. (The reason I describe the town is because its buildings, streets, businesses, parks, and manicured lawns reminded me of Scottsdale or Santa Fe – whereas to see it depicted in the mainstream media one would have thought it consisted of a bunch of wacky zealots on a mound of dirt.) I gave an NRB Prayer Breakfast speech about the disengagement experience which you can see on YouTube if you are interested. What I would like to point out is that that land was given away to Gaza for “peace,” and yet only days after the Israelis were yanked from their homes, farms, and synagogues, those same places were peppered with rocket launchers aimed at Israel – the same ones we face today. “Land for peace” seems as dark and murderous a prospect on this day as it was in the time of Chamberlain and Hitler.

Rockets have been landing daily, from Gaza, on Israeli towns like Sderot for years. Every day, or almost every day, for years. Now they are landing on Tel Aviv, so the news is more difficult for the mainstream media to ignore. But the facts, however you choose to interpret them, are the same. Israel has been under attack from the moment of its inception.

We are well. The people here are highly focused and extremely resilient. Let’s all hope and pray for a speedy and enduring solution to this terrible situation and for minimal loss of life and carnage here and for those who presently suffer under Hamas.

Best to all,

Franklin Raff

We Are Thankful For You On Thanksgiving

flag We are Thankful for You on Thanksgiving

We are thankful to be Americans

Thanksgiving is a special holiday for us.

We have much for which to be thankful as we gather as a family, for turkey, conversation and celebration.

Both of us had the privilege of being raised in Christian families. The tradition of trust in God which accompanied our upbringing also included a large measure of thankfulness. Neither of our families would be considered wealthy, but we were well lodged in the middle class.

For both of us the fourth Thursday in November was the largest celebration our families would hold outside of Christmas and Easter.

Mary Beth can trace her lineage to the decks of the Mayflower and a hearty Pilgrim by the name of Issac Allerton. Allerton was one of the original Pilgrims that settled in the Plymouth Colony and celebrated the first Thanksgiving feast we replicate today.

The Pilgrims came to find freedom of worship. They wanted to build a “Shining City on a Hill” in this new land. Puritan leader and Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, John Winthrop wrote, “For we must consider that we shall be as a City upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us. Soe that if we shall deal falsely with our God in this work we have undertaken, and so cause him to withdraw his present help from us, we shall be made a story and a byword throughout the world.”

It was this idea on which America was founded. And America has jealously protected religious freedom even as the jaws of government have devoured so many others. We are thankful that today we will have the privilege to worship our God, and hold him high as our Master, Creator, Protector and Deliverer. We can do this alone or in assembly with other.

As sinful human beings, we are thankful that God sent his Son, Jesus Christ to earth to live a sinless life and then to be punished and killed as a sacrifice for your sins. We are thankful that God accepts this sacrifice and despite our own weakness and sin we can have the hope of eternal life with Christ Jesus.

This is our family tradition, and we are thankful these ideas were taught to us as young children and reinforced by loving families.

We are thankful we were born in a land that loves and protects freedom. We are blessed to be Americans.

It is Christ’s mandate to prepare for his return which motivates our work. We are thankful for that work. To sit every day before our keyboards and defend our heritage and values in the arena of ideas is an unparalleled privilege for which we are thankful.

Finally, we are thankful for our loyal readers. The commentary business can be lonely at times. As a critic of the established order we make many enemies and constantly have to deal with detractors which spam us, or re-write our Wikipedia, or worst of our detractors in the mainstream media that print fabrications about us in their supposed news stories.

Our loyal readers make it all worthwhile. Just when things seem tough we will have a jewel in our in box which restores our spirits such as the one that arrived this morning, “I haven’t got my Floyd Report(s) in a couple of days. I miss it…” Over the course of a year we receive hundreds of wonderful emails that bless us.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Feds Will Soon Be Able To Read Your Email

HR 2471, like a snake, is slithering up to the “moderate” Democrat Patrick Leahy’s Judicial Senate Committee, to be voted on November 29th. Patrick Leahy has rewritten this electronic “privacy” bill to instead allow the Feds, local law enforcement, and literally any local or federal entity to read any electronic communication—email, private Facebook Posts, Twitter direct messages, Google Docs, etc.—without a warrant.

Isn’t there something called the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution? Something about privacy?

Who needs the Constitution when Barack Hussein Obama can take care of everyone’s needs?

Will America fight back against this unconstitutional power grab?

Time will tell.

The Law Itself Says Virtually No One Has To Participate In ObamaCare!

Obamacare SC The Law itself says virtually no one has to participate in ObamaCare!

Twila Brase, president of the Citizen’s Council for Health Freedom (CCHF) and one of the most educated of Americans concerning the ins and outs of Barack Obama’s Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, believes the language of the law makes it clear that the overwhelming majority of people do not have to participate in ObamaCare unless they freely wish to do so. Brase writes:

Obamacare has more chinks in its armor than a turtle without a shell. As a result, state governors and legislators can inflict great damage. The following amazing chink was discussed by a Goldwater Institute attorney during a Tennessee-based webinar on Monday (at which I was a panelist). It’s only 10 lines long in the 950-page version of the law:

‘No individual, company, business, nonprofit entity, or health insurance issuer offering group or individual health insurance coverage shall be required to participate in any Federal health insurance program created under this Act (or any amendments made by this Act), or in any Federal health insurance program expanded by this Act (or any such amendment), and there shall be no penalty or fine imposed upon any such issuer for choosing not to participate in such programs.’

I emailed Twila Brase and suggested that this language indicates that ONLY “health insurance issuers” may escape fines or penalties for not participating in Barack Obama’s signature healthcare takeover. Individuals and businesses who choose to not participate will face crushing fines and penalties obviously designed to FORCE their submission to the will of the left. Certainly, we have already heard of these punitive fines and penalties.

Ms. Brase was kind enough to respond, writing that “lawyers disagree” with my reading of this tiny portion of the law.

Is it possible that we are misreading the language and intent of the law? Does the above sentence actually mean to say that all “individuals, businesses, nonprofit entities and health insurance issuers” who offer group and individual health insurance coverage and refuse participation in ObamaCare will not be fined? That is, individuals who offer group or individual health insurance, businesses who offer group or individual health insurance, etc? Clearly, this would dramatically reduce the number of those who could refuse to obey the ObamaCare law and still avoid punishment.

One thing is certain–it’s difficult to imagine that a radical left at long last politically capable of literally controlling the life and death of 300 million American citizens could be guilty of stating that no one has to obey its commands! How could these power-hungry Marxists manufacture a 2700 page law, bribe and intimidate recalcitrant politicians into supporting it, and then commit such an extraordinary oversight?

Nearly 3 dozen lawsuits designed to take down ObamaCare are now working their way through federal courts. Maybe the question of who must really obey the law will eventually be answered. Until then, we can only hope that Twila Brase is absolutely correct and the creators of ObamaCare have made a monumental blunder.

Obama In Burma: ‘I Wish I Could… Impose My Will On Congress’

When it came to freedom of speech, Obama said all the right things – after all, he was not talking about an anti-Islam YouTube video in Burma. But he then followed up that glowing language with this bombshell:

Unholy Trio: Gun Control, The UN, And Obama

Guns SC Unholy Trio: Gun Control, the UN, and Obama

Welcome to President Obama’s second term, America — that special place where ridiculousness replaces raison d’etre, and presidents give us things like gun control a’ la United Nations.

Obviously, Obama understood he would never get the support needed for a gun control bill from Congress, so the astute Constitutional professor chose to skirt around the Constitution by signing on to the United Nations (UN) Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) shortly after his re-election. Liberals certainly know how to get what they want, ethics aside. Remember in 2010, when former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi described how liberals would circumvent the electorate to pass Obamacare? Pelosi said they would “…go through the gate. If the gate’s closed, we’ll go over the fence. If the fence is too high, we’ll pole vault in. If that doesn’t work, we’ll parachute in.” And parachute they did.

Now Obama’s doing the same thing with gun control. On one hand, we have the administration telling us they are committed to protecting our Second Amendment rights; while on the other hand, the president is joining alliances with UN gun-grabbers by giving them the green light for the ATT. In the real world, presidents work in conjunction with Congress to pass laws; but in Obama Land, anything goes.

The administration claims that the ATT primarily applies to exporting weapons, thus posing zero threat to gun ownership domestically. ATT’s verbiage, instructing nations to “take the necessary legislative and administrative measure to adapt, as necessary, national laws and regulations to implement the obligations of this treaty”, is too gray, hence leaving room to dilute or supersede the Second Amendment.

It is clear Obama’s been a gun control advocate all along, although he was too cowardly to admit it before re-election. According to the Washington Post, Obama last year told gun control activist Sarah Brady, whose husband Jim was shot during the Reagan assassination attempt in 1981, that gun control was “very much on his agenda…but under the radar.” History will not be kind to America’s 44th president, who promised transparency but governed mostly under the radar.

Of course, the UN wants us to believe that global gun control is for our own good; and granting them authority to force us to register our guns with them will prevent weapons from getting into the “wrong people’s” hands and will somehow make the world a safer place. For whom might it be safer? The easy answer is criminals.

In reality, government is the real problem. Case in point: that little scandal affectionately code-named “Fast and Furious,” wherein the Justice Department made the injudicious decision to sell weapons to those linked to the Mexican drug cartel in Arizona. Their plan backfired when the weapons “walked” across the border into Mexico and into the hands of cartel thugs. It should have been code-named “Dumb and Dumber.” And more than 50 million Americans voted to give them a second term.

The United Nations needs to mind its own business and stay out of ours, thank you. And President Obama needs to get over his attitude about those who, as he once put it, are bitter because they “cling to guns or religion.” Before he came along, we had the Constitution; need I say more? It doesn’t take a rocket scientist, or even this blond columnist, to deduce that if the UN is given an open door into our personal lives by way of the ATT, gun confiscations will, at some point, follow.

Syrian Rebels Murder Christians With Obama-Supplied Arms

As if “Benghazi-gate” was not sufficiently horrific, in a cruel twist of fate, American-backed Islamic insurgents in Syria are now thought to be using their CIA-supplied weaponry to kill Christians.
