“Duck Dynasty” Fans Stand By Suspended Star

Fans can also add their names to a petition calling on the network to reverse its decision and issue an apology to Robertson.

When faced with criticism, especially from Christian conservatives, the radical left belies its self-promoted tolerance. This was painfully obvious in the feverish criticism of reality star Phil Robertson’s recent statements regarding homosexuality.

The breakout star of A&E’s “Duck Dynasty” made some Bible-based statements regarding the sexual perversion – along with plenty of other sins – in an interview with GQ Magazine. Robertson, also a Louisiana preacher, faced immediate backlash from homosexual lobbyists Wednesday and, by the end of the day, received an indefinite suspension from the network.

While the left was certainly not bashful in its derision, Robertson’s family enjoys one of television’s most faithful audiences and millions in merchandise sales because they represent an alternative to that prevailing Hollywood sentiment. For this reason, there has since been a huge outpouring of support for the principled patriarch of the Robertson clan.

Conservative firebrand and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin – no stranger to personal leftist attacks – came to the embattled star’s defense on Facebook.

“Free speech is an endangered species,” she wrote, noting that those targeting Robertson “for voicing his personal opinion are taking on all of us.”

She was not the only politician to voice support. Bobby Jindal, governor of the Robertsons’ home state, identified the hypocrisy so evident on the left.

“The politically correct crowd is tolerant of all viewpoints,” he explained in a statement, “except those they disagree with.”

He noted that there is plenty in today’s media culture he finds offensive; however, he can also “acknowledge that this is a free country and everyone is entitled to express their views.” The selective outrage shown by the modern left is telling, he noted.

“It is a messed up situation when Miley Cyrus gets a laugh and Phil Robertson gets suspended,” he added.

Many of the show’s millions of fans have also been active on social media sites, with several popular Twitter hashtags – such as #IStandWithPhil – gaining traction within hours of A&E’s decision.

Furthermore, Facebook pages established in protest to the suspension exploded in popularity. A page titled “Stand with Phil Robertson,” for example, garnered more than a half million “likes” by Thursday morning. A number of other pages calling for boycotts of the network have experienced similar popularity.

Fans can also add their names to a petition calling on the network to reverse its decision and issue an apology to Robertson.

A&E certainly has the right to punish Robertson for expressing his views. The freedom of speech does not imply the absence of consequences.

In the same vein, however, the millions of Americans who support Robertson and his unapologetic faith in God can hold the network accountable for its shortsighted suspension.
