RickSantorum95745 224x300 Detroit News poll: Rick Santorum leads Mitt Romney in Michigan

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum has a slim lead over Mitt Romney, an indication the Michigan native son has yet to convince state voters he should be the Republican nominee for president, a Detroit News poll shows.

Santorum leads Romney 34 percent to 30.4 percent among likely Republican primary voters, but the gap is within the margin of error of 4.4 percentage points.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich had support from 11.6 percent of respondents, former U.S. Rep. Ron Paul had 8.9 percent and 12.4 percent was undecided.

Despite Romney’s win here in 2008 and the built-in advantages of name recognition and familiarity, party regulars appear to have doubts about his conservative credentials and the worth of his Michigan ties. It may cost him the dominant primary victory many expected.

Greg Rotter, an attorney and Santorum supporter from Indian River, said: “Is (Romney) saying things to get elected?”

  1. Why does Rick Santorum lead Mitt Romney in Michigan? As a life long Michigan resident, there are a couple of reasons.

    1. Romney “only” lived in Michigan as a young boy and then left the state for good. For him to protray himself as anything else………sorry, it isn’t going to work.

    2. Being endorsed by Governor Rick Snyder will not help. Why? Governor Snyder is treading on very loose ground with conservatives right now for his taxation of seniors pensions (state level) and his support to raise revenues to repair Michigan roads through higher resistration fees on vehicles. This will get him primaried in his next re-election bid for sure.

    3. One more item of concern with Romney is this. How can a self professed conservative get elected in a super liberal state like Massachusetts, pass healthcare legislation as a conservative which taxes these citizens at a higher rate?

Rick Santorum has been vetted by Michigna Tea Party(s) and he is the choice it seems….and rightfully so!

  2. Tatersalad, I know how corrupt Michigan is. We have Debbie stab-us-all-in-the-back Now that’s been in office since 1988 or before. We have Carl love-me-less Levin in office for over 35 years. During the 90s we tried term limitations on the Federal government offices but that failed and they stated that the people can vote them out. But, if they’re backed by the unions there is no chance. I ran for the 68th District in Lansing, MI, but the governor along with Lansing Township City Manager stopped me from running for state office in Michigan because I filed a recall petition against the Township City Manager. I know how corrupt that state is. I’m gonna fight to get the politicians out of office so the people will be heard. See website: http://www.haasstrep68.com
