Costas Uses Halftime Broadcast To Rail Against Guns

Bob Costas CC wfuv1 Costas uses halftime broadcast to rail against guns

Just days after Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher fatally shot his girlfriend and then himself, venerable sportscaster  used his platform to issue an attack on gun ownership.

Quoting an article written by a Kansas City writer, Costas argued that “handguns do not enhance our safety,” noting they “exacerbate our flaws, tempt us to escalate arguments, and bait us into embracing confrontation rather than avoiding it.”

Such generalizations are intellectually dishonest and dangerous.

Guns, which save countless lives when in the appropriate hands, are not responsible for any deaths. The mere presence of a gun owner in a certain situations can, by itself, de-escalate a volatile situation.

Instead, Costas continued parroting another individual’s comments by suggesting America’s “gun culture ensures that more and more domestic disputes will end in the ultimate tragedy and that more convenience store confrontations over loud music coming from a car will leave more teenage boys bloodied and dead.”

The article Costas referenced went deeper into the simpleminded argument for gun-grabbing legislation.

According to the writer, America needs to “reflect” on the “absurdity of the prevailing notion that the second amendment somehow enhances our liberty rather than threatens it.”

Both Costas and the writer from whom he borrowed included their belief that “if Jovan Belcher didn’t possess a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today.”

It’s been said many time before but, in light of this assertion, bears repeating: If someone seriously intends to commit murder, the lack of a firearm will not be a deal breaker.

Though this nation has experienced a dramatic shift to the left in recent years, plenty of people were upset with Costas’ gun control speech in the middle of a football game.

One Twitter user wondered: “Is there no venue from which the conservatives can have peace?” Another pointed out Costas’ selective outrage by posting that Costas “feels so strongly about ‘gun violence’ that he never once spoke up about Fast and Furious.”

I suppose it should come as no surprise, though, that a leftist talking head—even during a football game—would tackle an issue only when politically expedient to do so.

  1. Just who in the Hell is Costa? Let us really blame the culprit in the happening. The Football person and his girlfriend & do not blame an inanimate object for the gun did not do the act as the act was done by a person. Of course all liberals would not understand that crimes are committed by people.

    • I hate it when actors, athletes, and sports announcers get involved in politices. Costas should stick to reporting on sports and leave the politicies to people who are paid to do this. Liberals, like him, have not figured out that guns are not the problem; it is the person behind the gun that is the problem. Remember, the guy who recently killed 3 people with a knife and a bow and arrow? Unstable people will use whatever weapon is available, so Costas should just shut up. We Do not need his liberal/progressive ideas given to us when we are watching some sporting event.

  2. The real question should be: what does football have to do with this man’s state of mind? Obviously something about football is involved in his decision making process concerning this apparently senseless violence – otherwise how could one explain his need to end his life in front of the team’s management? One could easily say that the entertainment field encompassing NFL football must be somehow involved in precipitating these tragic events. Perhaps a ban on professional football is more in order here.

  3. Boycott the NFL!!! I,for one,am growing very tired of their leftist B.S.

  4. Costas is a moron who doesn’t understand the first thing about guns or gun safety. All he can do is spout the same old leftist drivel about banning guns so people can’t kill each other. It’s almost impossible to reason with these people because they don’t have reason to work with.
How many guns have all the gun laws in NY and Chicago kept out of the hands of criminals? Why would more gun laws be any different? If he had killed her with his bare hands, and he was certainly capable, would Costas be wanting to ban hands?

  5. Costas is a emotional halfwit creatin who ought to understand he could lose his place at the mic if he doesn’t stick to broadcasting sports…I wonder what he prefered as a weapon of choice to commit murder?

  6. If I could look him in the eyes I would tell him, along with all the execs at the alphabet networks to just report the news and for Costas to just report on the game. Nothing else. For him to make a statement saying that if there wasn’t a gun then they both would be alive is just an insane remark to make. What about a knife? Or, broken glass. A piece of wood. A crowbar. Costas please step up and get your ass kicking. Idiot.

  7. When it comes to Bob Costas, thank God for the remote control clicker. Costas comes on and …click…I’m on another station. I can click back and forth until that sanctimonious blowhard is off the air. Even as a sportscaster he is so tediously full of himself he’s unwatchable. He tries to bring into a game some weird historical context or significant factoid that basically ruins the game for the viewer. When it comes to Costas, thank God for the clicker!
