Virtually any recent poll shows the same basic trend of decreasing support for Barack Obama’s policies and leadership style. A recent survey conducted by Quinnipiac University, however, puts his unpopularity in perspective by comparing it to every other president since World War II.

Despite his predecessor’s notably low approval rate at the end of his second term, Obama beats even George W. Bush to earn the dubious distinction of the worst president in generations.

Quinnipiac Poll Assistant Director Tim Malloy noted the significance of such a result.

“Over the span of 69 years of American history and 12 presidencies, President Barack Obama finds himself with President George W. Bush at the bottom of the popularity barrel,” he asserted.

A full third of all respondents picked Obama as the worst post-WWII president, while a significantly smaller number – 28 percent – opted to give the title to Bush.

In contrast, just 8 percent determined that Obama is the best president of the era. Ronald Reagan overwhelmingly captured that honor, securing the support of 35 percent of all respondents. Bill Clinton and John F. Kennedy trailed him with 18 and 15 percent of the vote, respectively.

Well over half of those polled believe Obama is “not competent running the government,” with virtually the same number of respondents expressing disapproval of his job performance.

The poll also asked respondents how they felt about Obama’s job performance compared to their perception of his latest presidential rival, Mitt Romney.

By a seven point margin, the poll found that Americans would prefer the Republican candidate had won the 2012 election. Even among those in his own party, more than one in four are unsure Obama was the right choice.

Another poll released this week found a similar sentiment among Americans. According to results published Wednesday, the latest Zogby Analytics Poll shows Obama’s disapproval rate spiked within the last month from 50 to 54 percent.
