According to breaking news accounts, U.S. officials are confirming that fighter jets from Russia have conducted numerous missions into Ukrainian airspace throughout the past 24 hours.
Amid existing tensions between the two countries, such exercises are seen as further evidence of a possible ramp up to more violence in the region. While the nature of these flights is unclear at this point, American officials – requesting anonymity – express worry about the potential for a full-fledged military attack.
After taking control of the Crimean peninsula, Russian forces have made a number of strategic moves, indicating the invasion of Ukraine and beyond is not over.
U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel has reportedly tried unsuccessfully to contact Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu.
