A new documentary is set to air this weekend across America featuring retired neurosurgeon and possible 2016 Republican presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson. Carson first came on to the political scene last year when he made a speech critical of Obamacare and progressive government.
The documentary, entitled “A Breath of Fresh Air,” will be broadcast in 22 states and the District of Columbia, according to The Washington Times. Armstrong Williams, who filmed the project and is paying for the airtime, told Western Journalism in an interview Friday that one of its goals is to dispel the notion that Carson “only draws the attention of people on the right – conservatives.”
“We wanted to show from young people to blacks to latinos to senior citizens to the rich to the poor to the middle class – Dr. Carson has resonated with so many people. He is a breath of fresh air, and we wanted to document why people feel so connected to him.”
Williams, who is Carson’s business manager, said “A Breath of Fresh Air” took about 14 months to film. He compared the former director of pediatric neurosurgery of Johns Hopkins University Medical Center to superheroes.
“He’s like Wolverine and Batman, he’s legendary. It’s as if he’s had so many different lives, and we wanted to capture so many of their lives, and we decided to start filming, it was obvious that whether he decided to run for president or not… He has impacted so many lives, especially as a neurosurgeon, and we just wanted to tell that story differently than it has been told before.”
The talk-radio host did not deny multiple reports that Dr. Carson was considering a run for president. “He’s very serious about considering a run. He’s a neurosurgeon, he’s very decisive, he doesn’t waste time,” he said. “Every second counts in his life, he’s not getting any younger.”
“He certainly would not be forming a PAC and doing the things that he’s doing unless he’s seriously thinking about a run. While he has not announced and won’t announce this year, there’s definitely a possibility that he will.”
When asked when Dr. Carson will make that decision to run, Williams told Western Journalism, “next April.”
Still, Carson has never held political office, and is not even polling in the RealClearPolitics average. But when confronted on his lack of political experience, Williams evoked a famous president who did not hold political office prior to election, Abraham Lincoln, and asserted that “permanent politicians” are what is “absolutely wrong with this country.”
“Abraham Lincoln never held political office. People discounted him and said he was goofy and didn’t have a chance of winning. When this country was founded, the founders envisioned a housewife or carpenter or somebody from journalism, somebody would go to Washington every two or four years and serve the country and then return home.
“They never sought… permanent politicians, it goes with what is absolutely wrong with this country. We see people who have spent their lifetime running for elective office and have been successful, they have not always been the best recipe to put America back on track.”
Williams also noted that Carson’s “genius” and his “mindset” could compensate for any lack of political gravitas should he decide to run, calling him “a breath of fresh air.”
“I think we need a breath of fresh air, we need something new, we’re not saying that person is Dr. Carson, but he’s certainly someone that many people are trying to draft to run. And I just think that sometimes we need a long shot, a dark horse.
“Because the beauty of him is that while he does not have the experience, he has the genius and the mindset that he can surround himself with the best minds in the world that can put America back on track.”
