From the time the Catholic Church established the university system in the so-called Dark Ages, when scientific method was devised at the Cathedral School at Chartres, a lively exchange of ideas in science, philosophy, theology, law, and the arts has been the fuel to advance Western Civilization. Built on the best of Roman and Greek civilizations, she made course corrections that ultimately draw on the promise of redemption God gave our first parents. Adam and Eve paid the price for their own failure to exercise their authority over creation given to humanity made in His image and likeness. Cains and Abels have contested in the search for truth ever since. No human endeavor or institution is now or ever has been exempt from this struggle between good and evil. Our job is to do something about it as good stewards, not mockers and penalizers.
Today, Academia’s gift to civilization is not lively discourse in an honest quest for truth, but phony, stilted diversity and political correctness, which I call “the manifestation of the spirit of antichrist.” Academia has a disdain for faith, reason, and a quest for the innocence Jesus taught was the key to the kingdom. They have opted for the sewer of perversion and debt on their students whose qualifications for honest endeavor in the free market are more than seriously compromised.
The absent-minded professor, who is deep in contemplation in his search for truth, was always eager to share his knowledge with his students. These are few and far between today. Having eschewed faith and reason, the modern arrogant academic is more likely to steal his students’ thoughts and perpetrate lies over consideration of multiple sources of information that lead to honest conclusions.
Dr. Thomas Woods’ book “How the Catholic Church Built Civilization” provides some major course corrections dealing with the current persecution of faith and reason by forces in high places as well as the pit of hell. With a new Pope on the horizon, maybe its time to see what it means to all of us and why “progressives” hate believers so – whether Catholic or not.

Why “Progressives” Minimalize The Declaration Of Independence
On September 17, 2010, President Barack Obama spoke to the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute’s 33rd Annual Award Gala. During his speech – reading from a teleprompter – he quoted from the Declaration of Independence. Here is what he said: “We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal, endowed with certain unalienable rights, life and liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” Perhaps his teleprompter (still) can’t handle the phrase “endowed by our Creator”! Given the man’s penchant for avoiding the helm of the ship of state, his devious handlers give his teleprompter things to parrot with his convincing stentorian voice.
The Declaration of Independence defines the Constitution philosophically and spiritually, therefore in Beauty and its Author. “Progressives” have argued for years, quite successfully, that the Constitution is a living, breathing document, standing alone from its origins in the Declaration of Independence. It is subject to change as the mores of the times change. The Declaration, they say, was a motivational statement designed to gather support for the “real” document – the Constitution. Remember, Obama told Vladimir Putin in 2009 that “for all practical purposes, the Constitution is dead!”
The Declaration has several key elements that set the moral and philosophical basis for the Constitution. If one were to seek the “sought after ideal” for a form of government, it would be structured according to American philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce’s view of the normative sciences of Philosophy in the order of Beauty, Ethics and Logic – BEL. A single document like the Constitution is really a Cartesian nightmare without a moral basis that acquires its authority and blessings outside the reach of faulty humanity.
The Declaration is primarily a Document of Beauty because it recognizes Natural Law; self evident truths; and the endowment by our Creator of our universal right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It also runs a litany of abuses to demonstrate the false logic of despotic or “progressive” rule. This has been a battlefield of politics and the spirit since time immemorial. Here, the enemy is met and defeated. The price of hard-won liberty is eternal vigilance and great personal and national sacrifice. We haven’t done well lately…
The most insidious of the listed abuses are “acts of pretended legislation” that lead to “sending out agents to eat out the people’s substance.” When reading all the complaints against the king, it is apparent that under our Constitution, dishonest, evil, and often unneeded additions or amendments to necessary legislation are discouraged. It has become accepted practice, however, to use needed legislation as a Trojan horse to sneak in laws and interpretations that could not stand on their own. They put burdens on the people and create special favors at the expense of others. The 2010 Health Care bill launched 159 new agencies “to eat out the people’s substance.” Any bill over 50-100 pages in length is to be held suspect and its perpetrators looked upon with contempt if not treason. Recent legislation, obviously prepared well before the 2008 elections, tends to run between 600 and 3,000 pages. No good has come of that, fiscally, morally, or to the benefit of the wider populace, excluding those and their satraps able to extract tribute from the people!
The Declaration of Independence is pure Beauty as it is based on Nature’s God, Natural Law, and the principles of subsidiarity and solidarity. It also warns of the evils of intrusive government, giving the citizen a basis for discernment of good and evil practice. It’s denigration is a powerful tool for traitors and despots. It’s adherence drives them into the pit they came from.
