I genuinely appreciated the thoughtful comments that were posted in response to my first article, “How To Create A Monster.” The main idea was that when we abdicate our responsibilities, we create a hole. The government then comes along, fills that hole, and makes us pay for it. Sadly, we often are unhappy with the way our government filled that hole.
Abortion is really attacked from the wrong angle. People talk about choice. As a matter of fact, I don’t have any problem with choice. We just need to be discussing the right one. Since we’re never going to agree about when life begins, let’s not even go there because we don’t have to.
The real choice occurs when two consenting adults decide to have sexual intercourse. That IS the choice. Prior to that act, both of these individuals are aware of the fact that they might conceive a child. Contraceptives can be used, but not with 100% guaranteed effectiveness. There are two methods of birth control that do, however, work 100% of the time. One is abstinence, which isn’t even taught as an option in most sex-ed classes. The second is Natural Family Planning (NFP), which also works 100% of the time. One of the wonderful things about NFP is that you can use it to prevent pregnancies AND you can also use it when you want to GET pregnant. Of course, I’ve never heard about NFP being taught in any of our schools, either. If you haven’t heard of it, I can tell you firsthand that it’s absolutely wonderful.
While abstinence and NFP are not discussed, let me tell you what happened in my sister-in-law’s child’s fifth grade class. The entire fifth grade was taken to the auditorium where they sat boy-girl-boy-girl. The boys held a banana while the girl next to them put a condom on it. This was uncomfortable, if not traumatic, for her child. When parents stopped teaching legitimate sex-ed to their children at home, the government took over. I don’t believe that there are any of us who appreciate how the government filled that particular hole.
I’m not going to pretend that I know exactly how much an abortion currently costs. I’ve read anywhere between $500 and $1,000 each. For the sake of argument, let’s use the lower number. Some sixty-five million abortions have been performed in the United States since the passing of Roe v. Wade. Sixty-five million times $500 is $32.5 billion. Currently, our foreign aid budget is $32 billion. The residents of the U.K. waste $32 billion in food each year. We waste between 40 and 50% of our food. A sobering fact: the cost of ending world hunger is $30 billion per year. So, if we didn’t pay for abortions, if we and the Brits stopped wasting so much food, and if we didn’t give foreign aid to countries who hate us, we could eliminate world hunger. Even bleeding heart Liberals should be able to understand that.
You want taxpayers to pay for your contraceptives? I say “no.” You have no right to dip your hand into my pocket in order to pay for your recreation. I don’t ask you to pay for my cable tv, do I? I can just imagine the response if the feds told you that you had to do that for me. And while that makes me angry enough, now I’m being told that I have to pay for your abortions as part of Obamacare. So, instead of being out $6 to $10 per month to pay for your contraceptives, now I’m being told that I have to pay $500 for your abortion. That might not sound like a lot of money to you, but I can break this down in a manner that will help you understand my frustration much better.
Because I make all of our food at home from scratch, I’ve been able to reduce our food budget down to $100 per month per person. Now, that’s just food. That’s not paper products, soap, trash bags, toothpaste, etc. Just food. So, in order to pay for a single abortion, I would have to not feed one of the members of my family for five months. And this is all because you refuse to be held responsible for your own actions.
Let’s say that I want a 60” big screen 3D TV. The payments on that would be approximately $200 per month, which is probably about what most people who buy prepared foods spend each month to feed one family member. So I can have this TV set, which is a form of recreation for me; please tell me which one of your family members isn’t going to eat for the next year (the TV is around $2400)? You would think that I have a lot of nerve asking you to do that, wouldn’t you? And if the feds put that in a bill and made you do that against your will and moral objections, wouldn’t you be angry? What’s the difference? There IS no difference.
You say you don’t want to use a condom because you don’t like the way it feels. Or the fact that it deprives you of some of your sensation, stimulation, or pleasure. Really? Well, that big screen 3D TV of mine is necessary, so I can feel like “I’m really there” so I’m not deprived of any visual sensation, stimulation, or pleasure.
Here’s the truth: you don’t have to have recreational sex, and I don’t have to have that big screen 3D TV. You can be responsible and not make me pay for your contraceptives or abortions, and I can be responsible by being happy with the TV I already have or by buying a less expensive one that I can pay for myself. There is a difference between wants and needs. You don’t NEED recreational sex, and I don’t NEED a big screen 3D TV. But you WANT to have recreational sex, and I WANT that big screen 3D TV. The real answer? If either of us can’t pay, we don’t play.
If you become unemployed or injured, sure… I’ll be happy to help you with your NEEDS. But NOT your WANTS. Go out. Get a job. And make your own way. Can’t get a job? The taxpayers should be able to help you out until you get retrained. Newt Gingrich was right. You want 24 months of unemployment? You have to go to school and get a passing grade during that entire period of time. I don’t get a 2-year paid vacation. Why should I pay for yours? I have to work for mine, so you have to work for yours by getting an education. At the end of that 2 years, no more help from the taxpayers. Ever become unemployed like that again? Too bad. One chance is all anyone gets. No jobs available? Get involved in politics and vote for politicians who believe in the Free Enterprise System and not have you dipping into my pockets. And please don’t tell me that you spent that entire time looking for a job. I know how that scam works. Come up with a list of company names, etc., to show the state that you’re “looking.” And then get serious during the last 2-4 weeks. Truthfully, even 26 weeks is probably too much.
You are taking food out of the mouths of my children (actually, you’re taking food out of my mouth because I refuse to not have my children eat; but it’s affecting my performance at work, which is not good). You are preventing us from getting a better car instead of the broken-down one we now have that is constantly having to be repaired. You are preventing my children from wearing clothes that aren’t hand-me-downs. I can’t afford braces for my kids and have to buy the cheap frames for their glasses (the kids at school laugh at them). I can’t afford to send them to college or even help them out. In order to have these so-called “free” things given to you for no other reason than you are breathing, you are depriving me and my family from doing nothing more than barely surviving. Live the American Dream? Sure, once we get rid of all of the people who are scamming the system or committing outright fraud. Then I’ll have a lot more money in my paychecks.
Are you enjoying that free Obama phone (one woman has 30 of them)? Have you become morbidly obese while living on Food Stamps like some friends of mine have and who now have Type 2 Diabetes (I’m paying for them to be treated, too)? Are you having fun with those big government checks you get from the IRS and the state you live in even though you didn’t pay anything into the system? A friend of mine didn’t work and got $6000 in tax refunds in 2011 and $5000 in 2010. This is all part of Obama’s “Redistribution of Wealth.” My friend thought it was great. I didn’t because I knew that I helped give him that money. You know, he went out and bought the same computer with his refund that I bought, except his was a bit newer and had more stuff on it. Then he bragged about the fact that his was better than mine. I saw red.
When you’ve finally decided that you no longer want to be a parasite, I’ll celebrate because I’m NOT a willing host. Be responsible for yourself. Learn to distinguish between “needs” and “wants.” Learn a trade or get a degree. There are programs designed just for people like you. And, by all means, remember that nothing is “free.” Everything has to be paid for. Even those “free” food samples in the grocery store. You’re stealing from me and my family, and I’m tired of it. It wouldn’t be so bad if you didn’t rub it in my face, but you do. You want more, and then you threaten to demonstrate and riot if we don’t continue to give it to you. That’s just not right. I’m sorry that you can’t see that. Yes, being responsible for you and your family is harder; but if you didn’t want that responsibility, you shouldn’t have had a family in the first place. I don’t owe you a living, nor do I owe you the support of a spouse or children you can’t pay for. Making me pay for them is totally unfair and isn’t right on any planet, including this one. There are jobs out there. If you have to work multiple jobs, then so what? At one point, to support my family, I was working four jobs at the same time (one full-time and three part-time). Now, imagine my frustration when I was doing all of that, supporting my family and yours to boot even though you were perfectly able to support them at the time if you’d gotten up off of that couch or could have gotten the mattress off of your back in the morning. I’m surprised you didn’t end up with bedsores. Good thing you didn’t because I would have had to pay for you to get treated for those as well.

How Obamacare Affected My Mother
In the fall of 2011, we received letters from my mother’s secondary health care provider advising us that, effective January 1, 2012, she would be paying an additional $300 per month for the co-pays on five medications she was currently taking. Two of those co-pays were increasing to $75, and three were increasing to $50. Previously, the co-pays were either $0 or close to it. I sat there, stunned, trying to think about what I was going to have to do to come up with these extra funds. On Social Security, mom only received $909 per month. I called her doctors and the insurance company and asked why the sudden increase? Their answers were the same: Obamacare.
Working with her doctors, we were able to change to, as much as possible, generics. Previously, she had tried to switch to a generic for one of her allergy medications; however, the filler was different, and she was allergic to it. I know. What were the chances? So we had to get a waiver to keep her on the original medicine. That wasn’t going to work this time, though. Thankfully, the patent had run out on this drug, and a new generic had become available. She wasn’t allergic to that one, so we saved $75 per month.
We switched to the generic of a second medication. That also worked with no problem, and we saved another $75 per month.
Mom has COPD and is on three different drugs/inhalants that she uses with her nebulizer. One of these was changed to a generic. Then, working with my mother’s pulmonologist, we found a loophole that allowed her to receive her inhalants with a $0 copay, saving the remaining $150 per month. No, I’m not going to tell you what that loophole was. Heaven forbid they should find it and close it. Then I’d have to figure out some other way to make that $150 disappear.
The total amount of savings was $300. At least for the time being, these creative ways of working around the system were going to save my mother’s life and allow her to continue living at home. What I truly wondered, though, was what was going to happen to all of those people who didn’t have an advocate, like me, to help them or a doctor with the time to have one of his staff find a workaround? I found that thought quite troubling.
I don’t want you to think that it ends here. It doesn’t. There’s more.
We received a notice, about a month ago, that the monthly copay on her secondary health insurance was going to increase from $39.80 per month to $62.00. That’s just shy of a 60% increase. Think about that. A law that was supposed to keep the high rate of increase to a minimum and reduce costs just generated a 60% increase in my mother’s monthly premiums. But it didn’t end there.
Mom’s in-hospital copay was $450 PER YEAR. That means that no matter how many times Mom went to the hospital during a calendar year, all she paid was $450 ONE TIME. As of January 2013, she will be paying $650 PER OCCURRENCE. One year, only a couple of years ago, Mom was in the hospital six times. Heaven forbid that should happen now because she’d be paying $3,900 in co-pays. It doesn’t end there, either.
When comparing her 2012 coverage vs. her 2013 coverage, I found the following increases, again, all due to Obamacare:
Mom’s eye-care co-pays changed. Previously, annual eye exams and glasses were free. Now she would be subject to a co-pay for eye exams and a deductible for glasses of $200.
All drug co-pays dramatically increased.
The co-pays for doctor’s visits, including both her primary health care provider and specialists, dramatically increased.
The emergency room co-pay dramatically increased.
My mother now has dental coverage. Two cleanings per year for free. She can receive some xrays free and a complete set of xrays free every three years. That would be wonderful if my mother had teeth.
What we don’t know: There will be an increase in the monthly Medicare premium. Right now, it’s close to $100 per month. In spite of my efforts, I’ve been unable, thus far, to find out how much that increase is going to be. I shudder to think what it’s going to go up to based upon the amounts of all these other increases for 2013.
I do what I can to keep my mother healthy. First of all, I make sure she takes her medications daily. Second, I have her on two liquid vitamin supplements that are incredible. One helps to keep her body healthy. The other one helps her bones (she has Osteoporosis). I also had the house carpeted with an extra thick pad so that now when Mom falls, she doesn’t break anything. I’ve done my very best; and the taxpayers of this country should be grateful because if I didn’t do everything I do for her, Mom would be in a nursing home, and the taxpayers would be picking up the tab. Me? If you’ve read my previous articles, you’d see that I definitely follow my own philosophies. Mom does better at home, psychologically; and I do better knowing that she’s here and well taken care of (and I like having her around.)
Insofar as Obamacare is concerned, many elderly care facilities are going to have to close. Obviously, you can see from my statements here that it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. It’s much more expensive. It’s also much more intrusive. When the bill was passed, I received a summary in the form of an email. Are you aware of the fact that the government now has the right to come into your house and teach you how to parent your children? And they can do this in direct contradiction to your moral and religious beliefs. That was just one of the parts of this new law I found shocking. Most of our representatives, both in the House and Senate, never read those 2700 pages. I know I haven’t. Have you? Here’s another problem: I did read part of the bill. It’s written in legal mumbo jumbo. While that’s wonderful for lawyers, it does nothing for us, the common people. We need to insist that all laws, whether state, local, or federal, be written in such a way that anyone with an 8th grade education can understand them. Furthermore, no law should be passed that is longer than, say, twenty 8-1/2 x 11 inch pages, double spaced. A 2700 page law is ridiculous and, I’m sure, was created on purpose to make it seem like an insurmountable task to either read or understand. These are just a couple of ideas I wish could become law. Otherwise, how will we ever understand what our legislators are trying to do to us?
Obamacare needs to be repealed and rewritten in a much simpler form so we all can understand it. It’s not the bill of goods the American People were sold. Just because we didn’t replace the President, and just because the Senate is still going to be controlled by the Democrats, we need to keep up the pressure to get rid of this monstrosity. Please contact your legislators today. Find petitions to sign. If you don’t, Obamacare will be fully implemented, and we will be the losers. One final word:
From this point forward, I am no longer going to refer to the Affordable Care Act as Obamacare. I am going to call it OSAMAcare because, in reality, it is an act of terrorism that has been perpetrated upon the American People. It is, perhaps, the utmost form of medical and health care terrorism. People are going to die from lack of care and long waits for tests and treatment, just like they do in Europe and Canada. Osamacare is going to kill far more than the 3,000 people who died on September 11, 2001. In the end, it will kill millions; and the terrorists in Washington, D.C., along with those who wrote the bill, will be responsible.
