(AP) — A gold plaque hangs next to a bullet hole in the Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wis., where a lone gunman killed six worshippers and injured three others last August. It is engraved with the words, “We Are One.”
“It frames the wound,” says Pardeep Kaleka, son of former temple president Satwant Singh Kaleka, who died in the massacre. “The wound of our community, the wound of our family, the wound of our society.”
In the past week, that wound has been ripped open with shocking ferocity.
In what has become sickeningly familiar, gunmen opened fire on innocents in what should be the safest of places – first, at a shopping mall in Oregon, and then, unthinkably, at an elementary school in Connecticut.
Once again there were scenes of chaos as rescuers and media descended on the scene. Once again there were pictures of weeping survivors clutching one another, of candlelight vigils and teddy bears left as loving memorials. And once again a chorus of pundits debated gun control and violence as society attempted to make sense of the senseless.

But these are FACTS, and we can’t be bothered by those pesky things! We want the Nanny state to PROTECT us!
Take away all those nasty old guns! Then we will all be safe, right? Take a look at China, as an example. No guns there, right? Not legally, anyway. Just a week ago some mad man attacked 30 children in a school! Did he use a gun? OH NO! He used a knife. Shall we also ban knives? How about Oklahoma City, a few short years ago? No guns were used in that massacre, either, just common fertilizer and diesel fuel. Shall we add those to the things we are banning? When we are finally done, humans will be back in the trees, throwing rocks at the predators (unless we ban rocks, too) eating nuts and berries.
We are looking at the RESULT of the problem, not the problem. The problem? How about the veritable EPIDEMIC of kids with psychotropic mental problems? The only way we can minimally control them is with drugs, POWERFUL drugs, too. Drugs so powerful that if the individual decides not to take them anymore, they turn psychotic and violent! THESE are the people (mostly) who are committing these atrocities! They live among us, unknown and unidentified, a living, ticking time bomb. We never even know they have a problem until something like this happens. THIS is the problem that our government and medical industry needs to be working on, NOT banning guns. The chicken-little syndromers are alive and well, just looking for ANY excuse to push their agenda.
Let’s try, just this once, to treat the problem, and not the symptoms?
