As Egypt Goes Offline US Gets Internet ‘kill Switch’ Bill Ready

As Egypt’s government attempts to crackdown on street protests by shutting down internet and mobile phone services, the US is preparing to reintroduce a bill that could be used to shut down the internet.

The legislation, which would grant US President Barack Obama powers to seize control of and even shut down the internet, would soon be reintroduced to a senate committee, Wired.com reported.

As Egypt goes offline US gets internet kill switch bill ready

It was initially introduced last year but expired with a new Congress.

Senator Susan Collins, a co-sponsor of the bill, said that unlike in Egypt, where the government was using its powers to quell dissent by shutting down the internet, it would not.

“My legislation would provide a mechanism for the government to work with the private sector in the event of a true cyber emergency,” Collins said in an emailed statement to Wired. “It would give our nation the best tools available to swiftly respond to a significant threat.”

The proposed legislation, introduced into the US Senate by independent senator Joe Lieberman, who is chairman of the US Homeland Security committee, seeks to grant the President broad emergency powers over the internet in times of national emergency.

Susan Collins is another one of the East Coast idiots, and not a real Republican. She is just as worthless as Olympia Snowe. This Bill the idiot is proposing isn't needed the slightest, and she is hoping to fool more of the idiot crowd. We have the anti-American Patriot Act, and it already allows the Government to get by with murder. Time to get rid of it as well. We have had the power, within our Government, to go after any Internet attack, or saboteurs with ease. This Bill she is proposing, is just another nail in the coffin of destruction being built by hundreds of people, who are guilty of sedition and treason. If the people of Maine ever grow some real brain cells, Collins and Snowe will disappear. And they are no alone in this treachery, and it affect many of elected officials.

  2. Keep on you're states reps and tell them "NO WAY!"

Its you're job to make them conform. Get everyone you can to do the same things, Email, Fax, and Call, You're freedoms are at state folks. Get Busy. Also be on the look out for this UN Gun Ban to start making its way to you very soon. Tell you're state reps do not sign the UN Ban.

    • Thanks for bring up the UN gun ban. That's one treacherous bill looking to protect the one world order and give it the ability to control the citizens of each country.
The Kill Switch for the internet is along the same lines.
Sen. Collins's a hand picked fool, as is the picker. I'm sure the people of Maine are against the Patriot Act also and their vote was swayed by money from on high, just like it was here in Hawaii.

  3. What's her idea of a "true cyber emergency" ? Conservatives resisting, and sharing information about, the government's egregious actions against the citizens of this nation?

    • You heard about the hotline that they are set up after the Tucson shootings to report
people that should be evaluated for mental health conditions? So happens that they
are drawing up guidlines for subjects that display conservative values!

      • Wouldn't surprise me in the least. Obama said almost a year ago, when the Obamacare debate was raging, just before it was passed and signed, that "there's too much information out there" meaning quite clearly all those of us who knew WHY it shouldn't be passed and were spreading the truth about it to others. He poisonously hates anyone with traditional values and conservative ideals, because they're so opposed to his twisted program, and his homosexual and bisexual behaviors and Muslim beliefs. This is one person who should NEVER have been allowed anywhere NEAR political power. Of course, sick as he is, he'd want those who see that shut down.

And if you really believe that crap I got some really swell Florida property I'm willing to let go of – cheap!

    • What crap are you talking about? The only crap I saw was the US Senator sending a kill switch bill. That's crap I agree.

      • Sumerian Man says:

Yep, that's the crap! the part about where she said; "that unlike in Egypt, where the government was using its powers to quell dissent by shutting down the internet, it would not.

“My legislation would provide a mechanism for the government to work with the private sector in the event of a true cyber emergency,” Collins said in an emailed statement to Wired. “It would give our nation the best tools available to swiftly respond to a significant threat".” That BS.

  5. Collins must be from the "northern back woods" of Maine, if she is naive enough to think barry soetory wouldn't use an "internet kill switch" any way he chooses – -NOT just in the event of a cyber emergency!

So… I'm supposed to believe our government can be trusted to not hit the kill switch against We the People? Hmmmm… Yeah ri-i-i-i-ight! I'll believe that one on the same day that asteroids turn into daises!
