For the second time in less than five years, Fort Hood was rocked by an armed maniac Wednesday. The man, identified as 34-year-old Iraq War vet Ivan Lopez, reportedly killed three and injured another 16 people during his rampage at the Killeen, Texas base.

Unarmed personnel were instructed to find shelter during the ordeal, providing little defense against the armed gunman.

The shooting spree began around 4 p.m., and military police were on the scene within 15 minutes. At that point, an unnamed female officer was able to confront Lopez in a parking lot, putting an end to the terror by precipitating his suicide.

Lt. Gen. Mark Milley, Fort Hood’s commanding general, declared the officer’s actions “clearly heroic,” noting “she did exactly what we would expect from a U.S. military police.”

Milley detailed the unceremonious end to Lopez’s life, explaining the gunman initially began to approach the officer until the two were about 20 feet apart.

He “put his hands up and then reached under his jacket and pulled out the .45 caliber,” Milley recounted, before the officer “engaged and he put the gun to his head” and pulled the trigger.

A female officer similarly facilitated the end of Maj. Nidal Hasan’s 2009 rampage at the same base. Kimberly Munley neutralized that threat after Hasan had already killed 13 and injured dozens of others, making his the deadliest U.S. military base attack in the nation’s history.

Munley was injured in the exchange but successfully shot Hasan four times. The radicalized Muslim terrorist has since been sentenced to death for the attack.

While these two women are deservedly described as heroes for their commitment to protecting life, too many innocent people were killed and injured before armed officers ever arrived on the scene. Once again, the absence of firearms by law-abiding carriers appears to have made the nefarious plans of one lunatic even easier to complete.

Unfortunately, many leftist gun-grabbers – like Moms Demand Action founder Shannon Watts – are using this tragic incident as evidence that America needs even more gun control legislation.
