Americans Distrust The National Media

The Pew Research Center for the People & the Press has been tracking views of press performance since 1985. In September 2011, Pew found that negative opinions about the performance of news organizations now match or surpass all-time highs.

In the poll, 66 percent of those surveyed stated news stories often are inaccurate and 77 percent think that news organizations tend to favor one side over the other. 80 percent of those surveyed said news organizations are often influenced by powerful people and organizations.

This negative opinion of the mass media has increased in recent years. In the Pew Research Center’s first survey on news attitudes in 1985, only 53 percent said that news organizations were often influenced by powerful people and organizations and tended to favor one side.

According to another poll conducted by Gallup in September 2011, Americans perceive a more liberal bias in the media than a conservative bias by a large margin since at least 2002. A significant majority of respondents perceive bias in the media.

Americans were asked how much trust and confidence they have in the mass media and a majority — 55 percent — responded “not very much” or “none at all,” according to Gallup.

  1. Huh? Identify what's wrong with this sentence: "In September 2011, Pew found that negative opinions about the performance of news organizations now match or surpass all-time highs."

Yep, you got it–a poll from three months ago isn't really "now." Still, that's a minor issue–the news media are (and should be widely mistrusted).

Funny, though, that the article neglects to mention that–despite the misleading headline–the majority of people still trust news sources. And despite the fact that it was written by a politician, the article oddly also failed to mention that the same poll found that people trust other sources of information, including both government and business, LESS than the media.

You can see the results for yourself at http://www.people-press.org/2011/09/22/press-wide

    • media? government? business? Aint none of them trustworthy.

      • "Aint none of them trustworthy."

I agree that we should be at least skeptical of them all–but I found it interesting (and probably appropriate) that of the mainstream media are the most trusted of the three. Even if that's like someone being the most honest thief or the kindest in-law in a group.

  2. Robert Morrow says:

So, what is new? I have not trusted the so called News Media in over 50 years and the distrust is worse today. This mistrust come down to even our local News Paper. The have gotten the stories so incorrect most of the time, I stopped the paper. Now I get my information from the internet and have around the world input. Then I can compare and try to get the correct information.

  3. In every case in which the media reported an event that I knew something about, they were wrong. I can only surmise that their veracity is the same for events about which I know nothing.

  4. gliverson says:

Western Jounalism in general, has given themselves a free pass on honest, clean, truthful, verified, reporting on issues that apply to all political issues looooong ago!!!
They can ONLY be trusted to consistenly report truthfully and with an unbiased approach on things they gnereally do not care about at all which are out of the realm of their Left Wing socialistic Marxist agenda.
There was a day when honor in reporting, truth, and integrity was everything to many of them, now?, most of them are admittedly Left Wing Socailist Democrats and use their power and reporting to twist and influence this once great nation into the dark times of socialism and "Progressiveness" as they like to call it. Sad comentary on our nation – lead by liars in WDC and manipulated by a crooked and dirty press corp.

  5. Is there any problems in your world that is not caused by Jews? Maybe you cam blame Native Americans or blacks for a change…. Maybe catholics or southern baptists. How about muslims? They seem to be the whipping child at the moment? Be fair and spread your HATRED to other groups, Huh?

Sorry JP, he had it comin.
