And lo, there came unto me glad tidings: A Christmas tree has never committed an act of terrorism – has never beheaded a hostage (or taken hostages, for that matter), has never flown a plane into a skyscraper, has never blown up anything, and has never shot and killed 13 soldiers at Fort Hood, Texas, on November 5, 2009.
So, why can’t they just leave the Christmas tree alone? Why must the poor tree suffer a politically-correct makeover – so that no one (God forbid!) feels excluded?
I had sworn off writing War-on-Christmas columns, which increasingly seems an exercise in futility. My resolve weakened when, listening to a Boston television station, I heard a report about the annual “Holiday tree lighting on the Boston Common.”
“Holiday tree”? Hmmm. What major holiday, one celebrated by upwards of 80% of the American people, comes at this time of the year – Groundhog Day, St. Patrick’s Day? On what holiday do celebrants decorate a tree (real or artificial) with colored lights and tinsel – President’s Day, Columbus Day? December 25 is a federal holiday in recognition of what religious observance – Ramadan, Buddha’s Birthday?
And yet, all over the fruited plain (as Rush Limbaugh would say), municipalities twist themselves into balloon-animal shapes to avoid calling a Christmas tree a Christmas tree.
On November 26, a “lighting ceremony” for yet another generic “Holiday Tree” was held in Cincinnati’s Fountain Square. According to news reports, the 60 ft. Norwood Spruce was decorated with 25,000 white lights. That’s a lot of watts to illuminate intentional amnesia.
Last year, in Red State Kentucky, Governor Steve Beshear (a Democrat, naturally) renamed the “giant evergreen that will brighten the Capitol lawn this winter” a “holiday tree.”
Director of Communications Cindy Lanham explained that the designation “holiday tree” is meant to be “inclusive” of Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukah and New Years. (But not Kwanza, Ramadan and the Winter Solstice – what kind of inclusiveness is that?)
This is easily one of the lamest excuses ever offered for Christmas-avoidance.
To avoid using the C-word, Kentucky claims its “tree” represents everything from Thanksgiving to New Year. Makes sense. On Thanksgiving, families gather around the table to feast on a stuffed tree. On Hanukah, we play spin the evergreen. (BTW, why isn’t the menorah a Holiday Candelabrum?) On New Year’s Eve, we wear funny trees on our heads and toss pine needles in the air.
In the Tree Wars, common sense occasionally prevails. In 2005, the tree on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol became the Capitol Christmas Tree again, at the insistence of then-House Speaker Dennis Hastert. Sometime in the late ‘90s, the evergreen was secularized to Holiday Tree.
It only goes to show, if you want to bring back Christmas, elect more Republicans to public office.
The battle over the name of municipal/state/Capitol trees is one front of the (dare I say it?) War on Christmas, which – according to the establishment media – is an invention of FOX News, Bill O’Reilly and paranoid right-wing Christians.
This year, the name of Philly’s annual Christmas Village (inspired by the German “Christkindlmarket”), with its stalls selling seasonal merchandise, was briefly changed to “Holiday Village,” by municipal order, as a new sign above the lighted entrance proclaimed.
After the predictable uproar, Mayor Michael A. Nutter explained, “I took some time to step back from all this to think about it.” Stepping back from a political abyss, Hizzoner decided it was in everyone’s best interests to revert to the Village’s original name.
Oklahoma Senator James Inhofe refused to ride in Tulsa’s 2010 seasonal saunter, because, after 70 years, the city changed the name from Christmas Parade to “Tulsa’s Holiday Parade of Lights.”
Tulsa’s mayor from 1978 to 1984, Inhofe announced, “I’m not going to ride in a Christmas parade that doesn’t recognize Christmas.” There you have it – another cranky Christian who refuses to go along with the senseless charade that a Christmas parade is something other than what it manifestly is.
The current mayor, Dewey Bartlett, pleads, “If it was up to me, I’d call it a Christmas parade, but I also understand that we have a diverse community, and I’m sensitive to the importance of the many cultures and traditions that make up our city.”
Ah, the diversity/sensitivity maneuver. Throw in inclusiveness, and all the bases are covered.
Larry Fox, the parade board’s chairman, concurs with Bartlett’s rationale. “Moreover the parade has always welcomed participation and viewing by all Tulsans, whether or not they celebrate Christmas.” Presumably, this means that if it was a Christmas parade again, non-Christians would have to be blindfolded to prevent them from viewing the passing spectacle. Fox admits that even when the parade was non-inclusive and un-diverse, it always had floats themed to other holidays.
Just how diverse is Tulsa, anyway? Wikpedia notes: “Religiously, Tulsa is overwhelmingly Protestant. The City is located in a geographic strip of high church attendance and widespread belief in biblical Christianity often called the ‘Bible Belt.’”
Would you care to guess the percentage of Christians (Protestant, Catholic, evangelical) in Metro Tulsa’s population? Did I hear 70% — 80%? In fact, out of 414,827 Tulsans at last count, 98% are Christian.
So, 98% of the population sees their holiday neutered – stripped of religious content – to appease 2%?
Not even. Of the remaining 2% (divided among Jews, Muslims and Unitarians), most have more important things to concern themselves with – like double-digit unemployment and Iran’s acquisition of nuclear weapons – than the official name of a municipal parade.
Add to the secularization of trees, parades and malls, the schools that ban Christmas decorations and forbid the playing of Christmas music by school bands.
In New York City, the West Village YMCA just gave Santa Claus the cold shoulder. This year, the Jolly Old Elf was replaced by Frosty the Snowman and a penguin sidekick at the Y’s annual (what else?) “holiday luncheon.” “Frosty is a great winter character who would appeal to a broader number of kids,” Executive Director John Rappaport explained. That’s from an organization whose middle name is “Christian.”
The city of Boca Raton, Florida, allows menorahs to be displayed in public buildings, but not creches. The Sun-Sentinel newspaper claims “nativity scenes are religious symbols,” which somehow violate the mystical “separation of church and state” (even the fetishistic federal courts say they’re okay, when mixed with reindeer and candy canes), but “secular symbols like menorahs and Christmas trees do not.”
Would the Sun Sentinel please inform the state of Kentucky that Christmas trees are secular? If the menorah is indeed a secular symbol (please don’t tell my rabbi), what does it represent – renewable energy?
Liberty Counsel has a list of retail establishments that have purged Christmas from their advertising campaigns and websites, including Banana Republic, Gap, J. Crew, Old Navy, Radio Shack, Sprint and Staples. Some stores won’t allow help to wish shoppers a “Merry Christmas.”
As a Jew growing up in Johnstown, New York (in the Mohawk Valley), I somehow survived the public celebration of Christmas in the 1950s.
In school, we made Christmas decorations and sang carols. In stores and streets, shoppers routinely were wished a “Merry Christmas.” A nativity scene graced the public park. Department stores played Christmas music. Santa Claus came to town in a Christmas parade, sans penguin. Can you imagine such shocking insensitivity?
Sadly, they forgot to tell me to feel alienated or excluded. It was taken for granted that America was a Christian nation (at least in terms of the beliefs of the overwhelming majority) and that Christian holidays (more properly holy days) deserved public acknowledgement. Somehow, I managed to overcome the trauma.
Why should inclusiveness be the shining city on the hill? At some point in our lives, don’t we all feel excluded? Caucasians are excluded from public observance of Martin Luther King Day, which (however much we may pretend otherwise) is essentially a holiday for African-Americans.
Resident aliens may feel excluded by the public celebration of the Fourth of July. (I’m offended by public recognition of Cinco De Mayo, a holiday which belongs south of the border with piñatas and drug cartels.) Do non-vets feel excluded by Memorial Day and Veterans Day?
Most women feel excluded by the Super Bowl and the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. Men feel excluded by “Dancing With The Stars” and daytime television. I’ve felt alienated from our national government for the past two years.
The Somali Muslim who tried to blow up Portland, Oregon’s tree-lighting ceremony last month should plead aggravated exclusion as an extenuating circumstance.
One of the goals of liberalism is to create a world where no one ever feels excluded – a world of milk and cookies at nap-time, cuddly stuffed animals and somebody-needs-a-hug 24/7.
Christians are the exception.
Christians are the only losers in the sensitivity sweepstakes. No one complains about public lightings of giant menorahs and says they feel excluded because they don’t eat potato latkes at this time of the year.
Obama has Ramadan dinners in the White House (but won’t have a ceremony for National Day of Prayer), and no one writes letters of protest to local newspapers. They should, for other reasons. A menorah never threatened to wage jihad on gentiles.
It’s precisely because Christians are in the majority – as well as America’s historical connections to Christianity – that they are singled out for special treatment.
It doesn’t matter if Christians are offended by the slighting of their traditions. It doesn’t matter that public officials and merchants go to absurd lengths to pretend there’s no connection between this season and one of the two most important days in the Christian calendar – a celebration which accounts for 25% to 40% of annual retail sales and boosts tax revenue accordingly.
It doesn’t matter to the cultural elite that without Christmas, no Christianity, and, without Christianity, no America.
Maybe that’s why Christmas trees are getting the axe. Subconsciously, the left blames Christianity for America, the real object of its rage.

There is no constitutional right not to be offended!! If you are offended by CHRISTMAS, go some where else. I'm OFFENDED by YOU!
As a first time user I would like to take the time to wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year….A a person who camre to this country in April1959 with my family, I would like to state..we came, we assimilated, we became Americans…My ancestors were under the rule of the Ottoman Turks….We survived as a people and the thing that kept us going was our faith…Practising it meant death…and yet my ancestors did….Christmas was observed in secret for 400 hundred years of oppresion as was Easter and every other Christian Holiday….God Bless this country and its people…its time our basic ideals were recognized..after all isnt that what the U.S.A. is all about??
What must Christians do?
It is time to enter the Temple and vote out the crooks who steal our children's future
for the false promises and fool's gold of progressive praise.
HEY YOU BUNCH OF ASSHOLES, ITS A CHRISTMAS TREE, IT ALWAYS HAS BEEN, IT ALWAYS WILL BE. AND ALL THIS DIVERSITY CRAP, ALL IT DOES IS DIVIDE OUR COUNTRY. I DONT GIVE TWO-HOOTS IN HELL WHAT THOSE POLITITIONS IN WASHINGTON SAY, MOST OF THEM DONT HAVE ANY "COJONES" ANYWAY. THEY ARE ALL IN THEIR THROAT, WHERE "BARNEY FRANK'S ARE. SO IF YOU DONT LIKE THE WORD CHRISTMAS, GO TO HELL SOME WHERE ELSE. WE DONT NEED YOU HERE, AND WE ARE NOT ASKING YOU TO STAY HERE. APOLOGIZE—-NEVER.
It has NOT "always" been a Christmas tree. It is a pagan tradition with pagan origins that Christians should have nothing to do with.
yes, absolutely correct! all of you need to check your history! it is a pagan tradition that is associated w/ winter solstice/ the end of fall harvesting and an 8 day celebration of feasting and nothing to do w/ xmas or a god! the tradition began w/ bringing evergreens into the home and soon the evergreen tree. being a tradition so close to what christians celebrated as christmas , they soon adopted the dressing of the tree as their own, calling it a christmas tree. so there! so it is a pagan holiday tree!
It is so disgusting that we have to put up with people that want to change the way we have done things for so many years. If anyone doesn't like it, either shut up or go back to the country you came from. Atheists would be so much happier in a country that doesn't let you worship God. We would be happier too. I have no idea who the Chinese people worship. As far as I know, they haven't tried to change our ways. No one cares who doesn't celebrate Christmas. Some churches do not believe in celebrating Christmas and don't try to change how other people worship. I personally feel that we have been blessed because of worshipping Jesus and if we keep leaving him out of everything, the Dark Ages of the past centuries will be nothing compared to what we will have today. These evil people causing trouble will get their reward someday.
Just a couple of thoughts, as a Christian. Where does the BIBLE say that Jesus was born on Dec. 25, and where does the BIBLE say to celebrate His birth? It doesn't, but to celebrate His death.
The first American's would not celebrate Christmas because knew it was NOT a Christian holiday, but a pagan holiday with Christian names. Jeremiah 10 tells us NOT to lean the ways of the heathen, who cut down a tree and hammer it in place to make it stand up, and adorn it with gold and silver.
Jesus said that God was looking for those that would worship Him in spirit AND IN TRUTH.
Let's worship Him every day of our lives, and give thanksgiving every day that God loved us enough to send His only begotten son to die for our sakes, and to rise again, and is currently at the right hand of God, interceding for us.
But worshipping HIm with heathen, pagan traditions and customs? I don't think so.
Unfortunately many children do not understand that much about God – Christmas is often the only time they celebrate Jesus…Away in a Manger, Silent night – this is the way they learn of Jesus…I am 70 yrs. went shopping just before Christmas and there was rarely any Christmas music, decorations and I noticed people were not happy. No one said "Merry Christmas" except me and I did it in a loud voice. I feel sad. "They" have taken Christ out of Christmas. I am a retired teacher and believe me – we prayed every morning. Once I asked a student was he put out by our prayers, he said, no, he had a cousin in Iraq. (We also prayed for our men and women in service) In God's name. I was absent one time and a girl came up to me and hugged me and said she didn't know what to do when they had a minute of silence in class. People need Jesus and Christmas is a time of renewable faith.
I'm Jewish and was brought up loving Christmas. I celebrate Hanukkah too. Aren't more good holidays better? I come from the Ukraine and have always had a tree too. In the Ukraine its a symbol of New Years. So, Christmas tree or New Years tree or whatever, I like it all, but I don't think that Christmas should be removed, rather it should be celebrated. It's a religion with LIFE at it's core, unlike Islam where it's core is Conquest on the way to Submission. Islam is Evil, we should RECOGNIZE that too. But the GOOD (life centered) religions should be celebrated each in it's own glorious way. Celebrate it all. The good ones, that is
We need more Jan Brewers!!
"Governor Jan Brewer made it official: Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus, Hanukkah is an eight-day festival of lights, and state employees can celebrate either holiday as they see fit.
Brewer signed Executive Order 2009-11, which puts the "Christmas" back in "Christmas tree" for state employees after it was renamed a "holiday tree" by former Governor Janet "the Grinch" Napolitano.
Brewer's order makes it illegal for any executive agency to prevent employees from celebrating Christmas or Hanukkah, or placing items associated with the holiday on their desks. They are now also permitted to say "merry Christmas" and "happy Hanukkah" to one another without the fear of a trip to human resources."
Will the idiot occupying the White House take her to court over this too?
How long is this going to go on ? If someone doesn't like the CHRISTMAS tree – DON'T LOOK AT IT !
When are we going to get fed up and tell the weirdos were they can go ! Don't like "one nation under God"
then YOU don't say it – but I and others like me will ! Don't like Kwanza ? Then don't participate ! And, so far as our milktoast politicos – any of them that attempt to modify or change ANYTHING about Christmas
should not be trusted and should be voted out of office the first chance we get ! We are the MAJORITY –
let's start behaving like it !
The thing is how dare anyone takes Christ out of Christmas because without him we are NOTHING and Islam is evil and if we are going in that direction then life is just not worth living.
Christmas is celebrated because it is CHRISTMAS , and no one will ever change that . those that dont like IT to bad lump it / worse this happy holiday Crap dont make it with me just remember all businesses that will not display Christmas as Christmas , BOYCOTT, NO $ TO THESE GUTLESS JERKS.

I am 65 years old and I have wished everyone I know Merry Christmas all my life and I am not about to change now.Nor will I stop putting up a Christmas Tree.I celebrate Christmas as the birth of my Lord,my God.The God who came to this world to save us all from the sins of the world and gave everyone free will to make up there own mind about him and his saving grace. This political correcness is just a big bunch of hog wash.If you really want to set Washington on fire just stop going to work for oneday.Everybody man women and child stay home from work just one day and see how long it takes for them to listen to us then. Also stop spending money at any store who doesn't want to wish you a Merry Christmas and see how long it takes before they change there tune.
Just one last thought I want to wish everyone in the whole United States a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. How does that grab you?
Amen.! You know I'm offended by the crescent moon and star symbol of Islam. It scares me and brings to mind beheadings, bombings, and terrorsim. So, everywhere I see this symbol I should log a grievance that I'm offended. Therefore, by the standard the PC liberals use, any public display of the Islamic symbol should be taken down at once.
I agree with Baker 1036. Where does it say anywhere, that one has the right to walk around the planet and never be offended by anything one sees. Liberals just want all Christian symbols removed. They disgust me with their hypocracy. If you argue with them they are always the ones who get violent and irrational. MERRY CHRISTMAS, you liberal scrooges!
I personally will boycott any business that refuses to recongnize Christmas. I am in the market for a new car and I was considering buying a Lexus rather than a Nissan as I had bought several new Nissans and I thought I would try something different. Then Toyota came out with their latest commercial the one about people not wanting a smaller "holiday gift". That did it for me. A Nissan it is. You're right BillKay they are a bunch of GUTLESS JERKS. MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE.
Tell me what God thinks of Christmas tree.
GOD told me, he liked the Christmas Tree.
Jeremiah 10:3-4
As far as I'm concerned the left's intolerance seems to be in response to the concept of God's moral absolutes. Perhaps they truly fear God's morality and the implications for the "perceived restrictions" against their ways of life. After all, if one engages in sex regularly with one's girlfriend/boyfriend, is a casual cocaine user, regularly extorts minor amounts of money/supplies from one's place of work, constantly lusts after their neighbors' investment portfolios, houses, luxury cars, etc., and maybe even killed an unborn child because of "pure inconvenience" to their fruitless lives, then it might be a bit tough for them to simply go along with the concept of the birth of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords in a manger, a baby who would grow up into adulthood revealing Himself to be a sinless Saviour in human flesh. What they fail to realize is that Jesus Christ actually loves them enough to offer his own life for them…even while they lead the repulsive lives they lead!!!
The ultimate trouble is this: there is no universal salvation and God's morality must and does prevail. There will be no "walk toward the light" without the Lord Jesus, no matter how much anyone rants or raves. This nation was initially founded largely by people who at least acknowledged this fact verbally. The intolerance expressed by many today appears to be simply a choice of darkness over light, of intolerance over empathetic understanding of Christians and honoring their Constitutional right to worship God in spirit and in truth in accordance with their own individual consciences. This intolerance turns its back on our national history, incites argument and division, and actually is completely illegitimate with respect to tolerated practices in this nation. The cry of "separation of church and state" appears to be regularly misused of late by these protestors, without a clear understanding of our basic national history or precedents established over the centuries and even in the Constitution itself. The Constitution does not banish God from national practice, but it never endorses a national religion either, which is what the Founding Fathers apparently were concerned most about.
To recognize Christmas is to recognize Christ; to recognize Christ is to recognize His life; to recognize His life is to recognize His perfection; to recognize His perfection is to recognize our imperfection; to recognize our imperfection is to recognize our need; to recognize our need is to recognize Christ's fullness; to recognize Christ's fullness is to recognize that He is Savior and there is none other.
MERRY CHRISTMAS
first, I really HAVE to say I like BJCOOP! Right on BROTHER! OR SISTER! Whatever, that is how I feel, it is a CHRISMAS TREE! ALWAYS HAS BEEN AND ALWAYS WILL BE! And, Christmas is a national celebration of CHRISTmas! For CHRIST, the One who came to earth as a baby, and grew into a man who loved the whole world enough to die for them and rise again on EASTER, so that we might have eternal life with Him one day! Now, what is so offensive about this? To actually love a people so much and want only good for them is OFFENSIVE? Well, I guess the muslimes are somewhat sadistic or something. And if that offends a muslime, well, get over it, YOU OFFEND ME NO END! EVERYTHING ABOUT YOU REPROBATES OFFEND ME! Get out of our country, take your towels and your rags and your islam and go! Get out! Go worship whatever god you want, but take it elsewhere! And, while you are at it, take that abortion in the White House with you! Take the entire lot of fools and pussies there with you too! And when you leave, leave with this message, MERRY CHRISTMAS! HAVE A BLESSED AND VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS! MAY THE LORD GOD OF ABRAHAM AND MOSES BLESS YOU! THE LORD GOD OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA BE WITH YOU! IF He will………And He may do just that, as He is a far more forgiving GOD, (being a real GOD) than your “allah” ever was or ever will be! God IS great, and HE rules and reigns all on earth. And while you’re at it, send this message to those sorry excuses in the Capitol building. They can go with you if they desire. We real AMERICANS don’t want them either! They are as useless as you are! More so, to be honest. fake americans, all of them. I am proud to say that I live in a city where we have a NATIVITY SCENE and good old SANTA right on the courthouse lawn! AND we say MERRY CHRISTMAS HERE TOO! LONG LIVE THE STATE OF TEXAS! AND, LONG LIVE MY LITTLE TOWN!
Some of us stand for what we beleive, and we do not back down in the face of popular political correctness…..this correct crap has been over done, and needs to be thrown out of everyone’s life and language. I am very politically incorrect, and intend to stay that way! Just because someone says it is the right thing to do, does not make it so, and in this case, the correctness of today is so wrong it is sickening! But, even Jesus was mocked because of His life, and His ways. Yet He stood firm, and that is the least we can do, as a CHRISTIAN NATION! GOD BLESS AMERICA AND GOD BLESS CHRISTMAS!
This is just another slap to America – it seems as though the government is more concerned about people from other countries (muslims) and their feelings – subject Americans to searches (TSA) in order not to embarass these other people. I am just furious. They don't care for our feelings, something like a Christmas tree or to say Merry Christmas – it won't be long if our President continues this way, that we will all be wearing burquas and worshiping 5 times a day…. I cannot wait until Obama is out of office – all the dead people that voted for him, all the illegals, people who voted several times, prisoners…..
My question is: Is Easter next on the list????
I can’t understand why people are trying to change our wonderful country with
its beautiful traditions, which they are trying to replace. Someone wrote “A World Gone
Mad”. This is what has been happening. Our country, its heritage, has held us up.
We’ll have to double our efforts to never let it change.

Tyson Foods will now go out of business!
Too much politics now we have labeled trees into the debate of religion when a tree is just simply one of the gifts GOD bestowed this earth and what is really great is that the living ones give us air to breathe and how many times has a tree broke the force of a fall that was certain death?Sure we have cell phones now but it was not long ago our telephone and electric companies had creosote enriched wood poles almost too many to count- yes trees and lumber were GOD's gift too as well as JESUS' sacrifice
I find the argument about Christmas trees absolutely hilarious. The Christmas Tree/Winter Solstice tree is a non argument. Is the tree a Christian symbol? Is it a pagan symbol? Not really, instead both groups have used trees in various ways through time. What is important to me is that we celebrate Christmas as a holiday, understanding that we really don't know when Christ was born, nor is all that important. What is important, is that he was born to die, so that his birth has little or no significance in the overall scheme of things, the death is what is important, and the resurrection that followed. So folks, enjoy the holiday (Holy Day) known as Christmas (Christ Mass) and stop with the arguing over what is or is not important. God is important, everything else is just STUFF!
